Rhum J.M Gold Rhum Agricole Eleve Sous Bois. Habitation Bellevue, Macouba, Martinique — a golden-colored rhum agricole aged 12 months in re-charred bourbon barrels at the base of Montagne Pelée, displaying rich sugarcane flavor with beautiful viscosity from the volcanic terroir, raw sugarcane and warm gingerbread flavors softened by hints of vanilla and hazelnut — the ideal bridge between J.M's fresh Blanc and its aged Vieux expressions.

"Eleve Sous Bois" ("raised under wood") is the French designation for a rhum that has spent time in oak but does not yet qualify for the Vieux (aged rhum) designation, which requires a minimum of 12 months. J.M Gold sits exactly at that threshold: 12 months in re-charred bourbon barrels. This is the shortest oak maturation in the J.M lineup, and it was designed to achieve a specific effect: demonstrate the brilliance of J.M's volcanic terroir with just enough wood alchemy to add warmth, vanilla, and viscosity without obscuring the raw sugarcane character.

The Habitation Bellevue estate at Macouba, on Martinique's northernmost tip at the base of an active volcano, produces sugarcane with exceptional quality from the nutrient-rich lava soils. The Creole copper column still that J.M uses preserves that terroir character through distillation. In Gold, you taste what 12 months of re-charred bourbon barrel contact does to that exceptional base spirit: it warms, softens, and adds structure while leaving the cane's voice fully audible.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Rich golden color from 12 months of natural aging. Rich sugarcane flavor with beautiful viscosity — the volcanic Macouba terroir character is immediately present.
  • Palate: Raw sugarcane and warm gingerbread flavors lead with hints of vanilla and hazelnuts from the brief bourbon barrel contact. J.M Gold demonstrates the brilliant balance between terroir preservation and wood alchemy — the cane speaks clearly, the oak supports without dominating.
  • Finish: Clean and warm. The gingerbread and vanilla carry through with the Martinique mineral quality from the volcanic spring water reduction.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does Rhum J.M Gold taste like? Rich sugarcane with beautiful viscosity on the nose. Raw sugarcane and warm gingerbread on the palate with hints of vanilla and hazelnut from the bourbon barrel contact. Clean, warm finish with gingerbread and vanilla.
  • What does Eleve Sous Bois mean? French for "raised under wood" — a designation for rhum that has spent time in oak but does not yet qualify for the minimum 12-month Vieux (aged) designation. J.M Gold sits at exactly 12 months, the intersection of the two categories.
  • Why is J.M Gold perfect for cocktails? The brief oak contact adds warmth, viscosity, and vanilla without the tannin or wood dominance of longer-aged rhum. This creates ideal cocktail weight — enough character to contribute meaningfully, enough restraint to not overwhelm. It demonstrates a brilliant balance between terroir and wood alchemy in any cocktail application.
  • How does Gold compare to J.M VO and VSOP? Gold (12 months) is the lightest-aged J.M expression — closest to the Blanc in cane character with just enough wood for warmth and viscosity. VO (3+ years in new American oak + bourbon barrels) is more assertive and smoky; VSOP (3 years bourbon + 1 year lightly toasted new American oak) is the most refined and complex of the aged range. Gold is the gateway.
