Lagavulin Single Malt Scotch Whisky has been produced on the southern shore of Islay since 1816, delivering bold, smoky expressions with dried fruit, sea salt, iodine, and long warming finishes. The lineup includes 16 Year (the benchmark, ex-bourbon and refill Sherry casks, 43% ABV), 8 Year (brighter, more intense peat at 48% ABV), Distillers Edition (16 Year finished in PX Sherry casks), and annual Special Releases.

Frequently Asked Questions

How smoky is Lagavulin compared to other Islay whiskies?

Lagavulin is among the most heavily peated Islay malts at around 35 PPM, comparable in peat intensity to Laphroaig. What distinguishes Lagavulin’s smoke from Laphroaig or Ardbeg is the long maturation — the 16-year minimum aging in ex-bourbon and Sherry casks softens and integrates the phenolic compounds into dried fruit, leather, and seaweed complexity rather than presenting peat as raw and medicinal. The smoke is powerful but refined, making Lagavulin 16 one of the most balanced heavily-peated whiskies available.

What is the difference between Lagavulin 8 and 16 Year?

The 8 Year was revived in 2016 to celebrate the distillery’s 200th anniversary and is bottled at 48% ABV — higher proof and less time in oak means the peat is more direct, more intense, and less integrated with fruit and wood character. The 16 Year is bottled at 43% after significantly longer maturation, producing deeper dried fruit, Sherry influence, and complex oak layering over the peat foundation. Both are exceptional; the 8 Year is the more aggressive and the 16 Year is the more refined.
