Appleton Estate 12 Year Old Rare Casks Jamaican Rum. Nassau Valley Distillery, Jamaica — a hand-selected blend of pot and column still rums aged a minimum of 12 years in Jamaica's tropical climate, crafted by Joy Spence — the first woman ever appointed Master Blender in the spirits industry — using limestone-filtered water and no added sugar, flavors, or adulterants.

Appleton Estate has been operating continuously in the Nassau Valley since 1749, making it one of the oldest sugar estates and rum producers in the world. The Nassau Valley sits in a natural limestone basin whose filtered spring water — soft, mineral-rich, and consistent — is used in every batch of rum produced here. The estate grows its own sugarcane, mills it on-site, and ferments, distills, ages, and bottles everything within the valley. Few rum producers anywhere in the world control their entire supply chain to this degree.

The Rare Casks 12 Year Old is one of Master Blender Joy Spence's signature expressions. Each barrel is hand-selected by Spence herself from among the estate's aging inventory, with only rare casks that meet her exacting standards making the cut. The blend combines pot still rums — which produce the fruity, funky esters characteristic of Jamaican rum — with column still rums that add smoothness and structure. All components are aged a minimum of 12 years in Jamaica's hot, humid tropical climate, which dramatically accelerates maturation compared to cooler climates: 12 Jamaican years can equal 20 or more years of aging in Scotland. Bottled at 43% ABV with no added sugar, no flavoring, and no coloring.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Deep bronze with honey gold. Toasted oak, dried fruit, and hazelnut open, followed by dark cocoa, molasses, orange peel, vanilla, and hints of freshly ground coffee. Caramel and leather with a characteristic Appleton orange peel top note.
  • Palate: Richly full-bodied. A surprising initial hint of fruity pot still funk enveloped by dark chocolate and hazelnut. Punchy oak spice alongside vanilla, banana, and tropical fruit. Incredible depth for 43% ABV — drinks like something far more concentrated.
  • Finish: Long, bittersweet, and luscious. Dark cocoa, orange zest, and warm spice linger. Clean and dry through the close with no sweetener to mask the oak.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does Appleton Estate 12 Year Rare Casks taste like? Toasted oak, dried fruit, hazelnut, dark cocoa, molasses, and orange peel on the nose. The palate is richly full-bodied with pot still funk, dark chocolate, hazelnut, vanilla, and tropical fruit. The finish is long and bittersweet with dark cocoa and warm spice — no sweetener to mask it.
  • Who is Joy Spence? Joy Spence became Master Blender at Appleton Estate in 1997, making her the first woman ever to hold the position of Master Blender in the spirits industry anywhere in the world. Every Appleton Estate expression since 1997 reflects her craft and philosophy.
  • What is Jamaican pot still funk (hogo)? Jamaican rums are famous for their fruity, almost funky ester character — sometimes called “hogo” (from the French haut goût, “high taste”). It comes from the pot still distillation process and Appleton's proprietary wild-yeast fermentation, producing esters like isoamyl acetate (banana) and ethyl acetate (tropical fruit) that make Jamaican rum unlike any other style.
  • Does Appleton Rare Casks have added sugar? No — unlike many rum brands that add sugar, caramel, or flavoring after distillation, Appleton Estate uses no additives. The sweetness in the rum comes entirely from the barrel aging and natural ester development.
  • What cocktails is Appleton 12 Year best in? Complex enough to sip neat or on the rocks. In cocktails, it excels in a Rum Old Fashioned, Mai Tai, Rum Manhattan, or any spirit-forward rum cocktail where the barrel depth can lead. The 12 Year also pairs well with grilled meat and cigars.
