El Tesoro Paradiso is a 5-year Extra Añejo tequila from La Alteña Distillery in Arandas, Jalisco — the only tequila deliberately aged in French ex-Cognac barrels, created by Don Felipe Camarena in collaboration with Alain Royer of A. de Fussigny Cognac House in Cognac, France.

The collaboration is genuinely unusual in the tequila category: rather than using the standard American or French oak barrels available to any producer, Paradiso uses casks that previously held actual Grande Champagne Cognac from A. de Fussigny. The Cognac residue in the barrel imparts a distinctive earthy minerality, subtle brandied fruit character, and a drier, more restrained sweetness than American oak aging produces. At 5 years — well beyond the 3-year Extra Añejo minimum — the Cognac oak influence is thoroughly integrated into the spirit rather than surface-applied.

The base spirit uses El Tesoro’s traditional tahona production: a volcanic stone wheel crushes the roasted Blue Weber agave piñas rather than mechanical shredders, producing a more fiber-forward, earthy fermentation. The combination of tahona base and Cognac barrel aging produces a flavor profile genuinely unlike any other tequila in the category.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Earthy roasted agave, dried apricot, subtle minerality, and warm toasted almond. The Cognac barrel influence shows as restrained dried fruit rather than sweet vanilla. Palate: Complex and structured — roasted agave leads, followed by brandied dried fruit, earth, pepper, and light spice. Notably drier than American oak-aged extra añejos. Finish: Long, earthy, mineral, and warming with sustained agave and subtle Cognac wood.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the Paradiso’s barrel aging different from standard extra añejo?
Most extra añejo tequila ages in American ex-bourbon barrels, producing vanilla, caramel, and sweet oak character. Paradiso uses barrels that held genuine Grande Champagne Cognac from A. de Fussigny — the Cognac wood residue imparts a drier, more mineral, and earthier character than American oak, with brandied dried fruit rather than fresh caramel sweetness. The result is a tequila that reads partially like Cognac and partially like tequila rather than simply tequila plus sweet wood.

Is El Tesoro Paradiso good for sipping neat?
Paradiso is designed exclusively for neat sipping — the 5-year French oak aging and Cognac barrel complexity would be obscured in cocktails. It is one of the few tequilas that rewards the same slow, contemplative approach as a fine aged Cognac or XO Scotch. The mineral and earthy profile becomes more apparent as the glass warms in hand.
