Extra añejo is the highest age category in tequila — a spirit aged a minimum of three years in oak barrels, producing the deepest, most complex, and most whiskey-like expressions in the tequila category. Introduced as an official NOM category in 2006, extra añejo is where tequila most closely approaches the richness of aged brandy and bourbon.
The extended aging concentrates vanilla, caramel, dried fruit, and toasted oak character from the barrel while mellowing the agave-forward brightness of the younger categories. The best extra añejos preserve some agave character beneath the oak — a hallmark of quality production. At three, five, ten, or even twenty-five years of age, extra añejo is designed primarily for sipping neat rather than mixing. Browse all tequila at Wooden Cork.
