Cask strength. Uncut. Unfiltered. The 2021 annual release of Thomas H. Handy Sazerac Rye — the cask-strength companion to Sazerac 18 Year in the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, named for the man who popularized the Sazerac cocktail in New Orleans.

Thomas H. Handy was the proprietor of the Sazerac Coffee House in New Orleans in the late 1800s, credited with popularizing the Sazerac cocktail — a rye-based drink now recognized as America's first cocktail. The BTAC expression bearing his name is the younger, cask-strength rye in the collection: where the Sazerac 18 Year offers nearly two decades of maturation, Thomas H. Handy is bottled from younger barrels at full barrel proof, delivering the raw power and intensity of unaged-down straight rye.

As a BTAC release, Thomas H. Handy is produced in extremely limited annual quantities, allocated to a small number of specialty retailers, and not restocked once sold. The 2021 follows the same standard of all BTAC releases — uncut, unfiltered, bottled at natural barrel proof without dilution. The proof varies by vintage depending on the specific barrels selected.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Rich amber with youthful vibrancy.
  • Nose: Bold rye spice, dried fruit, caramel, and vanilla — the cask strength delivery intensifying every aromatic.
  • Palate: Full and powerful — rye grain, dark fruit, brown sugar, and a warming spice that coats the palate.
  • Finish: Long and assertive — pepper, cinnamon, and rye spice lingering through a satisfying, warming close.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Who was Thomas H. Handy? Thomas H. Handy was the proprietor of the Sazerac Coffee House in New Orleans in the late 19th century. He is credited with popularizing and commercializing the Sazerac cocktail — a combination of rye whiskey, Peychaud's bitters, absinthe rinse, and sugar. The Sazerac is now officially designated the cocktail of New Orleans and widely recognized as America's first cocktail.
  • How does Thomas H. Handy differ from Sazerac Rye 18 Year? Both are Buffalo Trace Antique Collection rye whiskeys from the same distillery. The Sazerac 18 Year is aged 18 years and bottled at natural proof — mature, elegant, and complex. Thomas H. Handy is younger and bottled at full cask strength — bolder, more powerful, and more assertive. They represent the full range of what American rye can express.
  • What does cask strength mean? Bourbon and rye enter the barrel at no more than 125 proof and proof down as they age. Cask strength means no water is added before bottling — the whiskey is delivered at whatever natural proof the barrels have reached. This preserves the full intensity, mouthfeel, and aromatic complexity that dilution would reduce.
  • Is the 2021 Thomas H. Handy still available? In limited quantities through specialty retailers. BTAC releases sell out at allocation and are not restocked.
