Thomas H. Handy Sazerac Straight Rye is part of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection (BTAC) — named for the New Orleans bartender who popularized the Sazerac cocktail. Uncut and unfiltered at barrel proof (typically 125–130+), from younger rye barrels selected at peak flavor. Intense cinnamon, clove, toffee, and dark fruit with a long, bold finish. Limited annual release, highly allocated.

Most commercial rye whiskey — and most bourbon — is proofed down from its natural barrel concentration to a target bottling strength (95 proof, 100 proof, 110 proof) by adding water, and then chill-filtered to prevent cloudiness when the spirit is chilled or ice is added. Both of these steps are standard production choices that prioritize consistency and accessibility. Uncut means Thomas H. Handy goes from barrel to bottle without any water addition — the proof you read on the label is the actual proof the spirit reached naturally in the barrel through evaporation and concentration during aging. Unfiltered means no chill filtration: the fatty acids, proteins, and long-chain alcohols that would be removed by filtration are retained in the spirit. These compounds contribute mouthfeel, texture, and certain aromatic complexity. At 125–130+ proof, Thomas H. Handy is an intensely concentrated spirit that benefits significantly from adding a small amount of water before tasting — even 5–10ml of water will open the aromatics substantially. Adding water also lowers the alcohol heat that can mask the rye grain’s own spice character at very high proof.
The Buffalo Trace Antique Collection releases five expressions annually: George T. Stagg (15+ year bourbon, barrel proof), William Larue Weller (12+ year wheated bourbon, barrel proof), Eagle Rare 17 Year (aged rye, 90 proof), Sazerac 18 Year Rye (18+ year rye, 90 proof), and Thomas H. Handy (younger rye, barrel proof). Handy is specifically the younger-barrel-proof rye in the collection — selected from barrels aged approximately 6–8 years at peak spice and grain character before extended oak aging would begin to dominate. The Sazerac 18 Year and Handy represent two ends of the rye aging spectrum: the 18 Year shows what time and oak integration produce in rye whiskey, developing more dried fruit and dark complexity; Handy shows what intense young rye character looks like at full natural concentration — the cinnamon, clove, and peppery rye grain character is at maximum intensity without the mellowing influence of extended aging. Both are limited to the same annual allocation cycle; both sell out immediately at retail.
