Nikka Miyagikyo Single Malt Whisky is the lighter, more elegant counterpart to Yoichi in Nikka's distillery portfolio — produced at the Miyagikyo Distillery near Sendai using pot stills heated by indirect steam at a lower temperature than most distilleries, creating a softer, more delicate spirit with elegant fruitiness and a distinctive Sherry cask influence that defines the Miyagikyo house style.

Miyagikyo was built by Masataka Taketsuru in 1969 as a deliberate contrast to Yoichi — where Yoichi uses direct coal-fired distillation for a heavy, peated character, Miyagikyo uses indirect steam heating at low temperature to produce a lighter, more refined new make spirit. The pot stills' specific shape and the temperature-controlled distillation produce the elegant fruitiness and floral character that Miyagikyo is known for. The Sherry cask influence adds a layer of dried fruit sweetness and spice that complements rather than overwhelms the distillery's delicate character. Miyagikyo Single Malt is what Taketsuru envisioned as the softer, more approachable face of Japanese malt whisky.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Elegant and floral — light fruit, Sherry-influenced dried fruit, and a gentle sweetness
  • Palate: Soft and fruity with the Sherry cask's contribution in harmony with the distillery's light, refined character — less smoke, more fruit than Yoichi
  • Finish: Clean and gently sweet

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Miyagikyo differ from Yoichi?

Yoichi uses direct coal-fired distillation, producing a heavier, peated, and more robust spirit with strong smoke and maritime character. Miyagikyo uses indirect steam heating at low temperature, producing a lighter, more elegant, fruitier spirit. The contrast between the two distilleries is deliberately maintained so that Nikka can create complex blends with range — Yoichi provides structure and smoke; Miyagikyo provides fruit and finesse.
