Nikka was founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru — the father of Japanese whisky — operating two distilleries: Yoichi (Hokkaido, robust and peaty, coal-fired pot stills) and Miyagikyo (Sendai, lighter and fruity, steam-heated pot stills). Core expressions include From The Barrel (51.4% ABV blended malt, intense and complex), Coffey Grain (Coffey still, tropical fruit and vanilla), Coffey Malt (toffee, citrus), Yoichi Single Malt, Miyagikyo Single Malt, and the approachable Nikka Days blend.

The two distilleries were deliberately designed to produce different flavor profiles — giving Nikka blenders the widest possible range of components to work with. Yoichi in Hokkaido uses direct-fired (coal-fired) copper pot stills, a method that applies intense, uneven heat to the still and produces a heavier, more robust spirit with significant sulfurous and meaty complexity alongside its fruit character. Miyagikyo in Sendai uses steam-heated pot stills, which produce a lighter, more delicate and floral spirit. Taketsuru modeled Yoichi on Campbeltown — a region known for its oily, coastal, robust style — and Miyagikyo on the lighter Lowlands style.
From The Barrel is a blended malt and grain whisky bottled at 51.4% ABV — near cask strength without being a single cask. Taketsuru believed whisky’s true character is best expressed without heavy dilution; From The Barrel was created to make that philosophy accessible in a consistent format. At its retail price, it represents one of the best value propositions in global whisky — complexity, intensity, and balance that would cost significantly more from a Scottish equivalent. The distinctive rectangular bottle with small label is one of the most recognizable formats in the Japanese whisky category.
