Tanqueray Gin 1.75L. Cameronbridge Distillery, Scotland — the bartender's benchmark, built on four botanicals and an unchanged recipe since 1830, distilled four times, available in a 1.75L format ideal for home bars, large gatherings, and frequent cocktail making.

Charles Tanqueray opened his distillery in the Bloomsbury district of London in 1830 with a singular aim: to perfect gin. He rejected the prevailing fashion for heavy, sweet spirits and instead built his recipe around restraint and precision — four botanicals only, each chosen to play a specific role. Juniper provides the foundational pine and citrus character. Coriander seed delivers a lemony, slightly peppery freshness. Angelica root adds an earthy dryness that gives London Dry its signature bite. Liquorice root provides a subtle sweetness that rounds and softens the finish without making the gin sweet. After distillation, the recipe passed to Charles's son, then on through generations, eventually surviving the Blitz (only one of Tanqueray's four pot stills survived, and it's still in use today). Today it's distilled four times at the Cameronbridge Distillery in Scotland.

The 1.75L bottle contains the identical spirit as the 750ml — same recipe, same distillation, same proof. The larger format offers better value for those who go through Tanqueray regularly or who entertain frequently. Tanqueray's four-botanical recipe remains the most-copied gin formula in the world and the baseline against which most London Dry gins are measured.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Bold, crisp, and unmistakably juniper-forward. Bright citrus from coriander and citrus peels alongside the piney, resinous juniper character that defines the style. Clean and precise.
  • Palate: The classic London Dry palate: assertive juniper, citrus zest, and the earthy, angular dryness of angelica root. A subtle warming spice from coriander. Liquorice rounds the mid-palate without adding sweetness.
  • Finish: Dry and clean. Juniper fades gracefully into a slightly bitter, herbal close. Long-lasting and precise.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the Tanqueray 1.75L the same gin as the 750ml? Yes — identical recipe, same four botanicals, same 47.3% ABV, same four-times distillation. The 1.75L is simply a larger format for better value and home bar convenience.
  • Why does Tanqueray use only four botanicals? Charles Tanqueray's philosophy was that gin perfection came through restraint. Four botanicals — each playing a specific role — produce a more precise, reproducible gin than a longer botanical list. The result has been the most-copied gin formula in the world.
  • What survived the Blitz? Only one of Tanqueray's original four pot stills survived the World War II bombing of their London distillery. That single still is still in use today and is responsible for the spirit's continuity through the decades.
  • What cocktails is Tanqueray best in? Built for the G&T and the Martini — its assertive juniper and dry, clean profile is the benchmark against which most classic gin cocktails are measured. Also outstanding in a Negroni, Tom Collins, or any spirit-forward gin drink.
  • How should I store a 1.75L bottle? Upright in a cool, dark location. Unlike wine, gin does not improve with age once bottled, but it will keep indefinitely without deteriorating if stored away from direct light and heat.
