Tanqueray London Dry Gin. Cameronbridge Distillery, Scotland — the bartender's benchmark, built on four botanicals and an unchanged recipe since 1830.

Charles Tanqueray first distilled his gin in Bloomsbury, London in 1830. The recipe that emerged — Tuscan juniper, coriander seed, angelica root, and licorice root — has never been altered. What makes this formula exceptional isn't complexity but discipline: four botanicals, each performing a specific role, distilled in copper pot stills using the traditional one-shot method where no gin concentrate is made. Just water added to proof. Tanqueray has been distilled at the Cameronbridge facility in Fife, Scotland since 1998, but the spirit remains identical to what Charles Tanqueray produced nearly 200 years ago.

The juniper is aged two years before distillation to concentrate its flavor and reduce water content. Coriander seed provides warm, citrusy spice. Angelica root acts as a balancer, binding the botanicals together with its musky, slightly bitter character. Licorice root adds subtle sweetness to the finish. In a 2016 poll, Tanqueray was voted the favorite gin among the world's most renowned bartenders — a vote of confidence in its reliability and versatility across every cocktail application.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Pine-fresh juniper with cedar, subtle lemon zest, and a faint earthy rootiness from angelica.
  • Palate: Bold juniper leads — piney and assertive — with coriander spice, lemon zest, crystallized fruit, and a hint of licorice sweetness building mid-palate.
  • Finish: Long, full, and elegant. Light peppery warmth with lingering piney juniper and a dry, clean close.
