Distilled in 1995. Aged 18 years across two climates and five cask types. One of the oldest, most meticulously documented tequilas ever bottled.

Fuenteseca is the project of master distiller Enrique Fonseca, widely regarded as one of the most technically rigorous producers in the tequila industry. This particular expression was distilled in September 1995 from a blend of 75% copper column still and 25% copper alembic still spirits, then embarked on an 18-year aging journey that unfolded in two distinct phases across two different climates.

The first five years were spent in 180L Canadian white oak casks previously used for Canadian rye whiskey, stored at 4,600 feet elevation in Atotonilco el Alto, Jalisco. In 2001, the spirit was extracted, blended, and re-barreled — 47% back into Canadian white oak, 53% into 220L European dark oak barrels previously used for California red wine. Those casks then moved to El Chapingo, a cooler hillside facility, for an additional 13 years before final blending and proofing to Fonseca's optimal 43.5% ABV.

The result is a tequila that reads more like a great aged Cognac or single malt than anything in the conventional tequila category — complex, restrained, and completely free of the added colorings and accentuated flavorings common in commercialized extra añejos.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Soft golden luster with light viscosity — notably un-manipulated for its age.
  • Aroma: Pear, jasmine flower, dry wood spice, and a delicate earthiness. Refined and restrained.
  • Palate: Rich, round, and creamy. Granny Smith apple, soft vanilla, cedar, sandalwood, and a moderate natural acidity that keeps it lively.
  • Finish: Long, clean, and balanced — minty green apple trailing into dry oak. Exceptional length without heat.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Fuenteseca 18 Year the oldest tequila available? Among commercially available extra añejos, Fuenteseca consistently produces some of the oldest expressions in existence. The 18 Year is one of the most age-verified, meticulously documented tequilas ever released — the distillation date, elevation, cask history, and aging timeline are all on record.
  • Why does the Fuenteseca 18 Year look lighter than other aged tequilas? Because nothing has been added. Many commercial extra añejos use caramel coloring to achieve a darker appearance. Fuenteseca 18 Year is bottled without additives, so its soft golden color reflects the actual cask interaction over 18 years — not a cosmetic adjustment.
  • What casks was the Fuenteseca 18 Year aged in? A two-phase process: first in Canadian white oak ex-rye whiskey casks for 5 years, then re-barreled into a split of Canadian white oak and European dark oak ex-California red wine barrels for an additional 13 years at a cooler hillside facility.
  • How does Fuenteseca 18 Year compare to Don Julio Real or Clase Azul Ultra? All three are top-tier extra añejos, but they represent different philosophies. Don Julio Real and Clase Azul Ultra are polished, rich, and presentation-driven. Fuenteseca 18 Year is a distiller-led, additive-free, archival-quality expression focused entirely on the aging process. It’s the choice for serious collectors and spirits enthusiasts who want documented provenance and zero manipulation.
