Bowmore Single Malt Scotch The Vintner’s Trilogy French Oak Barriques 26 Year Old is the French oak expression in the Vintner’s Trilogy series from Bowmore Distillery — an Islay single malt that began its maturation in ex-bourbon barrels for 13 years before being moved to French oak barriques (that previously held wine) for the remaining 13 years, producing the impact of a lengthy wine-cask finish on the characteristic Bowmore peat smoke and maritime style.

The Vintner’s Trilogy from Bowmore showcases the impact of lengthy wine-cask finishes on the distinctive Islay single malt character — each expression in the trilogy using a different wine cask type for the secondary maturation. The French oak barriques in this expression are the small-format barrels (approximately 225 litres) traditionally used for Bordeaux wine ageing, with more intensive wood contact than standard hogsheads. At 13 years in French oak wine barriques after 13 years in ex-bourbon, this is a full secondary maturation rather than a conventional finish. Browse the full Scotch whisky collection at Wooden Cork.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a French oak barrique?

A barrique is a small-format French oak cask of approximately 225 litres, the traditional barrel size of the Bordeaux wine region. The barrique’s smaller size and French oak character (spicier and with more tannin than American oak) produce a different and more complex wood influence than standard bourbon hogsheads or sherry butts.
