Senior & Co The Genuine Curaçao Liqueur — Original Clear is produced by the Senior family on the island of Curaçao since 1896, making it the only truly authentic Curaçao liqueur produced on the island itself. The base ingredient is the lahara orange — a descendant of the Valencia orange that adapted to Curaçao’s dry, rocky soil over centuries, developing a uniquely bitter, intensely aromatic peel unlike any other citrus variety. Lahara oranges are commercially worthless as a fruit (the flesh is inedible), but their dried peel produces a flavor complexity unavailable from any other orange.

Senior’s production method has not changed since 1896. Lahara peels are cut into four pieces using a wooden knife (metal stains the peel), sun-dried for five days, then placed in cloth jute bags with secret spices and herbs. The bags are hung inside a still filled with cane sugar alcohol and cooked for three days, cooled, the bags removed, water added, and the mixture distilled again over three more days. Each batch produces 55 gallons of base spirit. This distillate is blended with water and approximately 400kg of sugar per batch, then bottled on-site at the Landhuis Chobolobo estate in Willemstad. The Original Clear is the uncolored version — the base spirit before any natural colorant is added — showing the true color of the lahara distillate itself.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Dried bitter orange peel, warm spice, and subtle citrus blossom. Palate: Bittersweet orange — more complex and less sweet than commercial triple sec, with genuine peel bitterness from the lahara variety. Finish: Long and citrusy with warm spice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Curaçao liqueur and what makes it different from triple sec?

Curaçao is a liqueur made from the dried peel of the lahara orange, a variety grown exclusively on the Caribbean island of Curaçao. Triple sec is a broader category of orange liqueur (Cointreau is the most famous example) made from a blend of sweet and bitter orange peels, typically from Morocco or the Caribbean, using different production methods. The key difference is the lahara orange itself — its highly aromatic, distinctively bitter peel produces a more complex flavor profile than standard sweet orange varieties. Senior & Co’s Genuine Curaçao is the only liqueur produced on the island from the original lahara source, giving it a geographic and botanical authenticity that no other Curaçao-labeled product can claim. Many liqueurs labeled “Curaçao” are made elsewhere from different oranges and simply use the name as a style descriptor.

What is the difference between clear, blue, and orange Curaçao — and which should I buy?

The difference is purely visual. All three colors are made from the same base spirit with the same lahara orange recipe — the blue and orange versions simply have natural food coloring added after distillation. The flavor is identical across all three. The choice is based entirely on how you want the cocktail to look: Blue is used in the Blue Lagoon, Blue Margarita, and anything you want to turn aquamarine or teal. Orange adds warm amber color and works in Margaritas, Negroni variations, and punch. Clear is the most versatile — it adds the Curaçao flavor without affecting the color of the drink, making it the best choice for clear cocktails or any recipe where color neutrality matters.

What cocktails use Curaçao?

Curaçao is a key ingredient in the Margarita (as an alternative to triple sec or Cointreau), Cosmopolitan, Mai Tai, Blue Lagoon (blue version), Sidecar, and numerous tiki drinks. In the original Mai Tai recipe from Trader Vic, Curaçao is specifically called for — the lahara bitterness provides balance that sweeter orange liqueurs can’t replicate. For Margaritas, Senior Curaçao produces a slightly more complex, less sweet result than standard triple sec, which some bartenders prefer. The clear version is essentially interchangeable with triple sec in any recipe.
