The combination of virgin and re-charred oak barrels brings complementary influences: fresh virgin oak provides vanilla, dried fruit, and structured tannin from wood that has never previously held a spirit; re-charred bourbon casks add the caramel, coconut, and spice dimension the Clement house style is known for across its aged range.

At six years in Martinique's tropical climate, the wood extraction is substantial: the XO develops a dark mahogany color naturally from the cask, and the charred wood flavors that result are balanced by the inherent sweetness of the Habitation Clement sugarcane distillate — the same fresh-pressed cane juice from the Domaine de l'Acajou estate that has been the foundation of Clement's production since Homère Clement founded the operation in 1887.
