Plantation Trinidad 1997 Rum. Cognac Ferrand / Maison Ferrand, Trinidad — a single vintage bottling distilled at the Caroni or Angostura distillery in Trinidad in 1997, aged for over two decades, delivering an unexpected and polarizing profile that starts smoky, peaty, and earthy before evolving into lemon peel, butterscotch, and nougat — one of the most distinctly un-Caribbean-tasting Caribbean rums ever bottled.

Trinidad is not typically associated with smoky or peaty rum. The island's dominant production style is light, elegant column still rum — the same style that goes into Angostura bitters and makes up the backbone of many blended spirits. But aged single-vintage Trinidadian rum, particularly from older stocks, tells a very different story. The 1997 vintage has spent over two decades in cask before bottling by Cognac Ferrand, accumulating a character that surprises everyone who expects a conventional Caribbean sipping rum.

Like all Plantation single-vintage releases, the Trinidad 1997 travels from its Caribbean distillery to Château de Bonbonnet in Cognac, France, where it undergoes secondary maturation in former cognac casks. The cool, humid French cellar environment adds a different kind of complexity to the Trinidadian base — dried fruit, vanilla, and structured tannins. The result is a rum that rewards patience and defies expectations: the smoke and earth settle, and what emerges underneath is butterscotch, nougat, and citrus.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Original and striking — smoky, peaty, and earthy with black pepper. Unexpected for a Caribbean rum; closer in character to an Islay Scotch than a tropical island spirit.
  • Palate: Evolves dramatically from the nose. The smoke and earth give way to lemon peel, butterscotch, and nougat. The 20+ years of aging and cognac cask influence reveal a layered, surprisingly delicate core beneath the aggressive opening.
  • Finish: Long and complex. The smoke lingers alongside the nougat and citrus, creating a finish that rewards contemplative sipping rather than quick consumption.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does Plantation Trinidad 1997 taste like? Smoky, peaty, and earthy with black pepper on the nose — unexpected for Caribbean rum. The palate evolves dramatically to lemon peel, butterscotch, and nougat. Long, complex finish with lingering smoke and citrus.
  • Why does a Caribbean rum taste smoky and peaty? Long aging in tropical conditions followed by French cognac cask maturation can develop unexpected character in column still rums. The 25+ years of cask time transforms what was likely a light, elegant Trinidadian spirit into something with depth and character that defies the island's usual style.
  • Is this rum for everyone? No — and that's part of the appeal. The polarizing smoke-and-earth opening profile is designed for serious rum enthusiasts and whisky drinkers who want to explore the outer boundaries of Caribbean rum character. If you enjoy Islay Scotch or heavily aged spirits, this is likely for you.
  • What year was it distilled? 1997 — making the rum 25+ years old at the time of bottling. Each Plantation single-vintage release documents a specific distillery, country, and year.
