Myers's Original Dark Rum. Wray & Nephew Ltd., Jamaica — 100% Jamaican rum produced from pure Jamaican molasses using both pot still and continuous still distillation, matured up to four years in American white oak barrels for the rich, buttery dark character that has defined this brand since 1879.

Myers's Rum was established in 1879 by Fred L. Myers in Kingston, Jamaica, and has been producing its dark rum from the same island ever since. Unlike many dark rums that rely on caramel coloring and added sugar to achieve their appearance, Myers's characteristic mahogany color and rich buttery flavor come primarily from the aging process: molasses-based rum distilled in both continuous (column) and traditional pot stills, then matured in American white oak barrels for up to four years. The oak aging is described by Myers's as the "critical" factor in the rum's distinctive dark color and flavor.

Myers's is owned by Wray & Nephew Ltd. — Jamaica's dominant rum producer, also behind Appleton Estate and the J. Wray & Nephew overproof brand. The rum is positioned as the classic Jamaican dark rum for mixing: bold enough to carry through cocktails, smooth enough for casual sipping, and rich enough to define the profile of any drink it enters. Its thick, dark character has made it a perennial bar staple for cocktails calling for a genuine Jamaican dark rum.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Mahogany and charred wood aromas with dark caramel and molasses. Rich and thick on the nose.
  • Palate: Mildly sweet with a moderately full body. Thick, rich, and buttery with dark caramel, toasted oak, and molasses. The pot still component adds Jamaican funk and tropical fruit depth beneath the dominant dark rum character.
  • Finish: Warm and slightly bitter at the close. The dark oak and molasses character linger. Medium-length.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does Myers's Original Dark Rum taste like? Mahogany and charred wood on the nose with dark caramel and molasses. Mildly sweet and full-bodied on the palate with dark caramel, toasted oak, and buttery molasses. Warm, slightly bitter finish with lingering dark oak and molasses character.
  • Where does Myers's dark color come from? Primarily from up to four years of aging in American white oak barrels rather than from added caramel coloring. The oak extraction and the dark molasses base both contribute to the distinctive mahogany color.
  • Who makes Myers's Rum? Wray & Nephew Ltd. in Jamaica — the same company behind Appleton Estate and J. Wray & Nephew overproof rum. Myers's uses 100% pure Jamaican molasses sourced on the island.
  • What cocktails is Myers's best for? The classic dark rum applications: Myers's and Cola, Rum Punch, Dark and Stormy (though Gosling's holds the trademark), Planter's Punch, or any recipe calling for a dark Jamaican rum. The thick, dark character makes it the natural choice for full-flavored tropical cocktails.
  • How does Myers's compare to other Jamaican dark rums? Myers's is thicker, more molasses-forward, and heavier-bodied than most Jamaican dark rums — it is known for its distinctive dark character and buttery richness. Reviewers often place it next to Gosling's Black Seal as a benchmark dark rum, with Myers's leaning more heavily toward raw Jamaican molasses and Gosling's toward butterscotch and fruitcake.
