Kentucky straight bourbon aged 20 years. Released only when Master Distiller Dan McKee and Master of Maturation Andrea Wilson jointly determine available barrels have achieved peak maturity. The 2022 is among the approved annual releases in Michter's ultra-aged program.

Like the 25 Year, the Michter's 20 Year is not released on a fixed calendar. Michter's releases it only when McKee and Wilson's joint evaluation confirms the available barrels are ready — meaning some years produce no release. The 2022 was an approved year, joining 2016, 2018, 2019, and 2021 as documented release vintages from the Michter's 20 Year program.

Twenty years in Kentucky is extraordinary. Most bourbon is consumed between 4 and 12 years; very few distilleries produce commercially released bourbon at 20 years. At this age, the oak has fully integrated with the grain distillate, the rye spice has been absorbed into the wood structure, and the caramel and vanilla of extended maturation have deepened into something richer and more complex than any younger expression can achieve. The 2022 reflects McKee and Wilson's assessment that year's specific 20-year barrels had reached the standard the expression demands.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Deep amber with rich mahogany tones from two decades of barrel contact.
  • Nose: Caramel, vanilla, and dried fruit with a deep oak presence — the complexity of 20-year maturation layered through the aromatics.
  • Palate: Smooth and full-bodied — dark fruit, leather, warm spice, and caramel in a fully integrated expression.
  • Finish: Long and evolving — warm oak and spice fading through a deeply satisfying close.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What years has the Michter's 20 Year been released? Documented releases include 2016, 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2022 — with gaps in years when no barrels met the standard. The 2022 is Dan McKee's most recent approved 20 Year release.
  • How does the 20 Year compare to the 25 Year? The 25 Year adds five additional years of Kentucky barrel cycling, producing deeper oak integration, greater dried fruit concentration, and a longer, more complex finish. The 20 Year is more fruit-forward and slightly more accessible while still firmly in ultra-aged territory.
  • What is Andrea Wilson's role? Wilson is Michter's Master of Maturation — one of very few in American whiskey with this specific dedicated role. Her expertise focuses entirely on the aging program rather than distillation, enabling barrel-by-barrel peak identification that drives Michter's contingent release schedule.
  • Is the 2022 Michter's 20 Year rare? Extremely. The contingent release program means production is limited to only the barrels that meet the standard in an approved year — with no padding of the release with sub-standard stock.
