A Four Roses Visitor Center private selection, hand-picked by Master Distiller Brent Elliott from the high-rye OBSF recipe and bottled uncut at 125 proof after 9 years and 9 months in oak.
Four Roses builds ten distinct bourbon recipes from two mashbills and five proprietary yeast strains. A Private Selection buyer chooses one barrel of one recipe and takes it at full barrel strength, which means every bottling is a one-off — no two barrels repeat. This one came out of Warehouse TS, barrel 71-6C.
OBSF pairs the OB mashbill — 60% corn, 35% rye, 5% malted barley — with the F yeast strain. OB is the high-rye of the two Four Roses mashbills and F is the herbal strain, which puts OBSF at the spicy, green, aromatic end of the ten-recipe range rather than the fruit-forward end.
The rear selection label records the barrel at 9 years, 9 months — nearly a decade of Kentucky aging carried into the bottle at 62.5% ABV, with nothing added after the barrel was dumped.
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Caramel, vanilla and dark brown sugar over the OB mashbill's rye spice, with the F yeast's herbal, minty lift.
- Palate: Full and undiluted at 125 proof — brown sugar and dried fruit against seasoned oak, herbal and mint notes rising through the mid-palate.
- Finish: Long and warming, baking spice and toasted wood closing out at barrel strength.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What does OBSF mean? O = Four Roses distillery, B = the high-rye mashbill (60% corn, 35% rye, 5% malted barley), S = straight whiskey, F = the herbal yeast strain. OBSF is the spiciest and most aromatic corner of the Four Roses recipe map — rye-forward with a distinct green, herbal character.
- How is a Private Selection different from the standard Four Roses Single Barrel? The flagship Single Barrel is traditionally bottled from the OBSV recipe at 100 proof. A Private Selection lets the buyer choose any of the ten recipes and take the barrel uncut, so recipe, age and proof change with every barrel and none of them repeat.
- What does barrel strength mean on this bottle? Nothing was added after the cask was dumped — no water, no chill filtration. 125 proof is simply what barrel 71-6C measured at 9 years and 9 months.
