Sixteen years old and bottled at 138.2 proof — a Four Roses Visitor Center private selection drawn from a single OESV barrel and released for Father's Day 2024, with a commemorative back label signed by Master Distiller Brent Elliott.
Four Roses produces 10 distinct bourbon recipes by crossing two mashbills with five proprietary yeast strains. The Private Selection program lets buyers choose a single barrel of one recipe and bottle it uncut at barrel strength, which is why no two selections taste alike. Barrels chosen for the distillery's own Visitor Center in Lawrenceburg never enter normal retail distribution.
This one came out of Warehouse RN, barrel 63-6E, at 69.1% ABV. The commemorative back label reads "Raise a Glass to the Man Who Raised You Well." At 16 years, it sits well beyond where most Four Roses private barrels are dumped — the majority of the program lands between 9 and 12 years, which makes a 16-year OESV selection an unusual bottle even inside a program built on unusual bottles.
OESV pairs the E mashbill — 75% corn, 20% rye, 5% malted barley — with the V yeast strain. Four Roses describes it as the most subtle of the ten recipes: delicate fruit and caramel rather than heavy spice or florals, which is exactly why OESV barrels tend to be the ones set aside for extended aging.
Tasting Notes
- Nose: The OESV recipe's signature delicate fruit and caramel — pear and apricot — deepened by sixteen years of oak.
- Palate: Full and undiluted at barrel strength; corn sweetness and the E mashbill's restrained rye carried on mature oak.
- Finish: Long and warming, the recipe's elegant fruit character running through an extended, oak-driven close.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What does OESV mean? O = Four Roses distillery, E = the low-rye mashbill (75% corn, 20% rye, 5% malted barley), S = straight whiskey, V = the delicate-fruit yeast strain. Four Roses calls OESV the most subtle of its ten recipes — light pear and apricot fruit balanced against corn and rye rather than heavy spice.
- What is a Four Roses Visitor Center Private Selection? A single barrel chosen at the Lawrenceburg distillery and bottled uncut at barrel strength for the Visitor Center. These barrels are not part of standard retail distribution, and each one is a one-off — recipe, age, warehouse and proof all vary from barrel to barrel.
- Why is a 16-year Four Roses private barrel unusual? Most Private Selection barrels are dumped between 9 and 12 years. Sixteen years puts this one in the age range Four Roses normally reserves for its Limited Edition Small Batch components, and the barrel-strength 138.2 proof means none of that maturation has been diluted away.
