In 2014, Rio Chenery left New York City and returned to his family home in Jalisco. He had been witnessing firsthand the worldwide explosion of agave spirits, and wanted to bring more unique Mexican distillates like the ones he grew up around to international audiences. With that goal in mind, Rio founded Estancia.

Beginning with the Raicilla he’d known since childhood, Rio has expanded the scope of the brand, remaining at the forefront of unique Mexican style and distillation to bring a diverse and educational selection of agave spirits to new audiences and palates, working with humility and respect with his local producers across Mexico.

My first encounter with Raicilla was about 1970 after arriving in Ylapa a few miles south of Puerto Vallarta on the west coast of Mexico. You can only get there by boat even today. As our little cabin cruiser arrived at the town dock to enjoy the sight of a half dozen Federales escorting a group of counter-culture types at machine gunpoint for smoking marijuana on the beach, thankful it wasn't us. Headed for the outdoor cantina and ordered a shot of the local tequila and heard the story of Raicilla. Super smooth and drinkable. The bartender sold me a quart mason jar which traveled all over Mexico with me.
Two years ago I happened to be back to Ylapa and at the same cantina was thrilled to again enjoy the same ancient 400-year-old recipe.
I am totally thrilled to find it in stock at Wooden Cork! It is, however, somewhat more expensive than my mason jar from the 1970s.
