Don Julio Anejo 70th Anniversary is a cristalino expression — anejo tequila aged 18 months in American white oak, then charcoal-filtered to remove color while preserving the oak-derived complexity. The result is a clear tequila with the smooth, rounded profile of an anejo and the visual appearance of a blanco. Created to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Don Julio Gonzalez's founding of his first distillery in 1942.

Cristalino is an increasingly significant category in premium tequila — the charcoal filtration that removes color also strips some of the heavier, more aggressive tannins that extended oak contact produces, leaving behind the vanilla, caramel, and dried fruit character while making the spirit lighter and more elegant on the palate. The 70th Anniversary edition was the expression that brought Don Julio into the cristalino category.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a cristalino tequila?

Cristalino is an anejo or extra anejo tequila that has been charcoal-filtered after aging to remove color. The filtration strips the amber color that oak aging imparts while retaining the vanilla, caramel, and fruit character the wood developed. The result is a clear tequila with the complexity of an aged expression and a lighter, smoother texture than unfiltered anejo.

How does Don Julio 70 compare to Don Julio 1942?

Both are aged expressions but different in character. Don Julio 70 is an 18-month anejo that has been charcoal-filtered — elegant, lighter, and approachable at 35% ABV. Don Julio 1942 is a 2.5-year anejo without filtration — richer, more concentrated, and more oak-forward at 38% ABV. The 70 is the smoother and more delicate sipping expression; the 1942 is the bolder prestige expression.
