Bomberger's PFG™ (Precision Fine Grain) Kentucky Straight Bourbon. Michter's Distillery, Louisville, Kentucky — a groundbreaking expression that applies Precision Fine Grain™ technology to the Bomberger's program: fully matured in new toasted and charred American oak barrels, then finished in custom French fine grain oak barrels crafted from wood air-dried for over 40 months in France from the Tronçais, Allier, Nevers, and Vosges forests, bottled at 100.2 proof (50.1% ABV) — mahogany red in color with burnt sugar, spice, and chocolate on the nose, and a full-bodied, creamy palate of fruit, spice, and toasty sweetness.

The PFG™ designation represents Michter's most ambitious application of wood science to the Bomberger's program. French fine grain oak from the most celebrated coopage forests in Europe — Tronçais, Allier, Nevers, and Vosges — is tighter-grained than American oak, extracting differently and more slowly into the spirit. At over 40 months of air-drying, the staves are among the most thoroughly seasoned wood used in American whiskey production, with moisture and harsh tannins largely dissipated before coopering.

The result is a two-stage wood program: the American oak standard bourbon maturation builds the foundational caramel, vanilla, and grain character; the French fine grain finishing adds a specific European oak complexity — dried fruit, spice, and a creamy mouthfeel — that American oak alone cannot produce. At 100.2 proof, the Bomberger's PFG™ delivers this two-stage wood complexity at a bottling strength that preserves both the American and French oak contributions without the dilution that lower proof would introduce.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Mahogany red — the specific color of bourbon finished in French fine grain oak.
  • Nose: Burnt sugar, spice, and chocolate with floral undertones — the American oak foundation deepened by the French oak finish's specific aromatic contribution.
  • Palate: A harmonious blend of fruit and spice enveloped in toasty, sweet notes. The two-stage wood program creates a seamless whole where neither American nor French oak dominates.
  • Finish: Full-bodied and luxurious with a creamy mouthfeel and lingering soft spice and chocolate — the French fine grain oak's specific contribution to the close.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is Precision Fine Grain™ technology? PFG™ is Michter's proprietary approach to French fine grain oak finishing, using staves from the most celebrated European coopage forests air-dried for over 40 months. The tighter grain of French oak extracts differently from American oak — adding dried fruit, spice, and creamy mouthfeel without the aggressive caramel extraction that American oak produces.
  • Why are the Tronçais, Allier, Nevers, and Vosges forests significant? These are France's most celebrated coopage forests, used for the finest barrique cooperage in Burgundy, Bordeaux, and Cognac production. Tronçais in particular is considered the finest French forest for wine barrel production — the tightest grain, most consistent structure, and most valued by top European producers. Applying this wood to American bourbon finishing is unprecedented at this level of specification.
  • How does the PFG™ relate to standard Bomberger's Declaration? Bomberger's Declaration is a straightforward 108 proof Kentucky Straight Bourbon. The PFG™ applies a second finishing stage using French fine grain oak, producing a fundamentally more complex and nuanced expression at 100.2 proof. The two expressions honor the same Bomberger's heritage through different production approaches.
