No. 3 London Dry Gin. Berry Bros. & Rudd, distilled in Holland — the world's only gin to win World's Best Gin four times, and the first ever gin to win the Global Spirits Championship, built on just six precisely chosen botanicals by the only person in the world to hold a PhD in gin.

Berry Bros. & Rudd is Britain's oldest wine and spirits merchant, operating from No. 3 St James's Street, London, since 1698. When they set out to create their own gin, they approached it with the same obsessive precision that defines their three centuries of trading. The development team — which included Dr David Clutton, the only person in the world with a PhD in gin — worked for two years and 730 days on the recipe. The six botanicals are weighed with precision, steeped for over 16 hours in ultra-pure grain spirit, and distilled in a 100-year-old brick-encased copper pot still at a family-owned distillery in Holland — the birthplace of gin.

The formula is deliberately minimal: three fruits (juniper from Italy, sweet Spanish orange peel, and grapefruit peel) and three botanicals (Moroccan coriander, cardamom pods, and angelica root). No. 3 is designed with a single brief — to be the best possible classic London Dry Gin for a Martini. Juniper is emphatically front and center. Every other botanical serves to support, lift, or balance the juniper rather than compete with it. The result has won four World's Best Gin titles at the International Spirits Challenge, including Supreme Champion Spirit — the first gin ever to do so.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Bright, crisp, and fresh — an uplifting welcome of juniper. Orange peel sweetness alongside a wisp of herbal complexity. Assertive but never harsh.
  • Palate: Juniper to the fore, firm and unrelenting but softened by floral notes and spicy, warm cardamom. Plenty of citrus zing from the grapefruit and orange peel, complemented by the gingery spiciness of coriander. Oily and aromatic with a dry, angular structure.
  • Finish: The earthy dryness of angelica root kicks in on the close. Clean, long, and bone dry. Outstanding in a Martini.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does No. 3 London Dry Gin taste like? Bright and juniper-forward on the nose with citrus and herbal complexity. The palate is dry and crisp with firm juniper, warm cardamom, grapefruit and orange peel zing, and gingery coriander. The finish is long and bone dry with the earthy dryness of angelica root.
  • Why does No. 3 use only six botanicals? Berry Bros. & Rudd's brief was to create the definitive Martini gin — one where every botanical either supports or lifts the juniper without competing with it. Six carefully chosen botanicals achieve this better than a longer list could.
  • What awards has No. 3 won? Four-time winner of World's Best Gin at the International Spirits Challenge, and the first gin ever to win the Supreme Champion Spirit — the Global Spirits Championship's highest award.
  • Where is No. 3 Gin distilled? In Holland — the birthplace of gin — at a family-owned distillery with over 300 years of expertise, in a 100-year-old brick-encased copper pot still.
  • What cocktails is No. 3 best in? Designed explicitly for the Martini, where its juniper-forward, angelica-dry structure is exceptional. Also outstanding in a G&T with a minimal, quality tonic. Best with a lemon twist rather than an olive.
