Tears of Llorona No. 3 Extra Anejo is a blend of extra anejo tequilas aged in three distinct cask types — half in Scotch whisky barrels, a quarter in Sherry casks, and a quarter in French Limousin Cognac barrels. Produced by master distiller German Gonzalez, creator of Chinaco tequila, as his definitive statement on what extended multi-cask maturation can achieve with extra anejo tequila.

The Scotch cask component is the defining differentiator. Very few tequilas are aged in ex-Scotch barrels — the residual compounds from peated Scotch whisky production leave a faint smoky, mineral character that integrates with the agave over extended aging in a way no other cask type produces. The Sherry and Cognac cask components add dried fruit and spice that balance the whisky barrel influence. The result is one of the most complex and individualistic extra anejo expressions produced — not a crowd-pleasing smooth sipper but a serious statement bottle for collectors who want to taste what pushing the boundaries of tequila maturation actually produces.

Note: Due to the cork and bottle design, there is potential for leakage in transit. Wooden Cork will provide resolution options if this occurs; replacements and exchanges are not available for this product.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are Scotch whisky barrels used for tequila aging?

Ex-Scotch barrels — particularly those that held peated Scotch — contain residual phenolic compounds and tannins from years of whisky maturation. When extra anejo tequila ages in these casks, those compounds integrate with the agave distillate over time, contributing a subtle smokiness and mineral character that American oak bourbon barrels cannot provide. It is an unusual choice that produces a distinctly different flavor profile from conventional extra anejo tequila.

What is the significance of German Gonzalez as the producer?

German Gonzalez founded Chinaco tequila in the 1980s — the first premium tequila imported to the United States and widely credited with introducing American consumers to the concept of sipping tequila as a fine spirit rather than a shot. Tears of Llorona No. 3 is his most ambitious and experimental expression, built on decades of production experience and designed to demonstrate the full potential of the extra anejo category through unconventional cask selection.
