Auchentoshan Three Wood is the most complex expression in the standard Auchentoshan range — a Lowland single malt triple-distilled and then matured sequentially in three different cask types: American bourbon, Oloroso sherry, and Pedro Ximénez sherry. The Three Wood designation refers to these three successive wood types, each adding a distinct layer of flavour to the spirit.

Auchentoshan is one of the few remaining Lowland distilleries and the only one to triple-distil all its production — a method that produces a particularly light, clean, and delicate spirit. The Three Wood's sequential cask program adds progressive complexity to this clean base: the bourbon casks contribute vanilla and light fruit, the Oloroso adds dried fruit and nutty spice, and the PX adds a rich dark sweetness. Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Rich and complex — toffee, Christmas cake, dried fruit, and the distillery's signature delicate base beneath the wood influence
  • Palate: Full-bodied and sweet — raisins, dark fruit, chocolate, warm spice, and caramel
  • Finish: Long and richly fruited with lingering dried fruit and warm sherry sweetness

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Three Wood mean?

The Three Wood designation refers to the three sequential cask types used in the maturation: American bourbon barrels, Oloroso sherry butts, and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. Each wood type is used in succession, building progressive layers of flavour on the triple-distilled Lowland base spirit.

Is Auchentoshan Three Wood heavily sherried?

Yes — the Oloroso and PX sherry casks in the final stages of maturation produce a noticeably rich and sherried character. It is the most sherry-influenced expression in the Auchentoshan range and one of the most dessert-like Lowland single malts available.
