Ardbeg 10 Year is the benchmark expression from Ardbeg Distillery on Islay — the standard against which all other heavily peated single malts are measured, matured in ex-bourbon casks for 10 years at approximately 55 PPM phenol level and bottled at 46% ABV without chill filtration.

Ardbeg was founded in 1815 near Port Ellen on Islay's Kildalton coast, closed for much of the 1980s and 1990s, and rescued by Glenmorangie plc in 1997. The 10-year is where the Ardbeg distillate character first comes through fully: the combination of heavy Islay peat smoke, coastal brine, sweet vanilla from ex-bourbon casks, and the distillery's characteristic dark chocolate and espresso notes. The peat is intense but the sweetness is always present alongside it. Browse all Ardbeg at Wooden Cork.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Intense peat, smoky tar, vanilla, dark chocolate, espresso, and brine
  • Palate: Rich and complex — smoke, dried fruit, toffee, espresso, and dark citrus
  • Finish: Exceptionally long with persistent peat, vanilla sweetness, and bittersweet cocoa

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Ardbeg 10 the most heavily peated whisky?

No — at approximately 55 PPM it is heavily peated but not the most extreme. Bruichladdich Octomore reaches 80–300+ PPM. What makes Ardbeg 10 distinctive is the combination of high peat level with the sweetness and complexity from ex-bourbon maturation, producing an intense but not one-dimensional peat character.

How does Ardbeg 10 compare to Laphroaig 10 and Lagavulin 16?

All three are southern Islay malts but with distinct styles. Ardbeg 10 is the most chocolate and espresso-forward. Laphroaig 10 is the most medicinal and iodine-heavy at approximately 50 PPM. Lagavulin 16 is the most refined — lower PPM but longer aging producing integrated smoke and sherry complexity.
