Ardbeg Corryvreckan is the most aggressive expression in the core Ardbeg range — named after the notorious whirlpool off Scotland's west coast, bottled at 57.1% ABV without chill filtration, and matured in new French oak and ex-bourbon casks that produce a more tannic, dark berry-inflected, and ferociously intense peat character than any other standard Ardbeg release.

The Corryvreckan whirlpool is one of the most powerful in the world — the name is an accurate description of what this whisky does to the palate. Where Ardbeg 10 Year uses purely ex-bourbon casks, Corryvreckan's new French oak component adds significant tannin structure and dark berry character that intensifies rather than softens the phenolic peat. At 57.1% ABV it requires water to open fully. Browse all Ardbeg at Wooden Cork.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Intense peat, dark berry, leather, espresso, and a strong French oak tannin edge
  • Palate: Ferocious at full strength — peat smoke, dark fruit, black pepper, charred wood, and cask strength heat
  • Finish: Very long and smoky with persistent tannin, dark fruit, and a lingering peated warmth

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Corryvreckan considered more intense than Ardbeg 10 Year?

Two reasons: the new French oak casks add tannin and dark berry character that the 10-year's ex-bourbon casks don't produce, creating a more aggressive wood structure; and the 57.1% ABV is substantially higher than the 10-year's 46%, delivering the peat character at full force before water.

Should Corryvreckan be drunk neat?

At 57.1%, water is strongly recommended to open the nose and soften the spirit. Start neat for a few minutes, then add a few drops — the dark fruit and complex peat emerge more fully with a small dilution.
