Aberlour A’Bunadh is the cask strength expression of the Aberlour distillery in Speyside — released in numbered batches, non-chill filtered, and bottled at natural cask strength without water reduction, producing one of the most intensely sherried single malts in the standard market at any price point.

Produced at the Aberlour distillery on the banks of the Lour and Spey rivers at the foot of Ben Rinnes, A’Bunadh (“the original” in Scottish Gaelic) uses exclusively Oloroso sherry butts sourced from Jerez for its entire maturation. There is no bourbon cask in the program — every drop of spirit goes into first-fill sherry oak, which is what produces the concentrated dark fruit, praline, and chocolate character that defines the batch. The Ben Rinnes spring water used in production is one of the purest sources in Speyside, mineral-light and clean.

Because each batch is bottled at natural cask strength, the ABV varies — typically between 59% and 62% — and the flavor profile shifts slightly between releases. Serious collectors track individual batches. The 98-point Chairman’s Trophy at the 2016 Ultimate Spirits Challenge is a consistent reference point for the quality ceiling this expression reaches. Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Rich and concentrated — oloroso sherry, Seville orange, praline, dark cherry, and ginger with vanilla underneath
  • Palate: Full and warming at cask strength — dark chocolate, dried fig, spiced orange, black cherry jam, and a deep oak structure
  • Finish: Very long, warming, and spiced with lingering dried fruit and bittersweet cocoa

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the ABV change between batches?

A’Bunadh is bottled at natural cask strength without water reduction, so each batch reflects the actual strength of the barrels selected for that release. This varies slightly batch to batch — typically between 59% and 62%.

Should I add water to A’Bunadh?

At cask strength, adding a few drops of water is common and recommended — it opens the nose considerably and softens the alcohol heat without losing the sherry concentration. Start with very little and adjust to taste.

How does A’Bunadh compare to Macallan cask strength expressions?

Both are exclusively sherry-cask Speyside single malts at cask strength, but A’Bunadh is typically darker, spicier, and more concentrated. It is also significantly more accessible in price while delivering comparable intensity.
