Hamilton West Indies 1670 Blend Rum. Ed Hamilton, Ministry of Rum — a blended aged rum combining Demerara rum from Guyana's Diamond Distillery with Worthy Park Estate rum from Jamaica, named for the year Worthy Park began producing rum, bottled at 84 proof as an ideal aged Daiquiri and cocktail base.

1670 is Worthy Park Estate's founding year — the year sugarcane production began on a site in Saint Catherine, Jamaica that has been continuously operating ever since, making it one of the oldest continuously producing rum estates in the Western Hemisphere. Hamilton's West Indies 1670 takes its name as a tribute to that heritage and pairs Worthy Park's funky Jamaican character with the earthy, smoky depth of Demerara rum from Diamond Distillery on the banks of the Demerara River in Guyana — the same distillery that produces El Dorado rum.

The result is a blend designed specifically for cocktail mixing — particularly the aged Daiquiri — where two of the Caribbean's most characterful rum traditions meet in a single bottle. The Jamaican component delivers banana, tropical esters, and high-ester funk; the Guyanese component adds dark stone fruit, smoky oak, treacle, and earthy Demerara depth. No sugar is added. The 84-proof bottling keeps it accessible for everyday cocktail use while preserving both rum traditions' distinctive characters.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Ripe bananas and tropical fruit from the Worthy Park component, layered with dark fruit, smoky wood, and molasses from the Demerara side. An unusual and complex combination of Jamaican funk and Guyanese earthiness.
  • Palate: Full-flavored and layered. Dark fruit, spice, caramelized plantain, and tropical fruit mingle with smoky oak and treacle. The two rum traditions complement rather than compete.
  • Finish: Medium-long with a warm, dry close. The Demerara earthiness and the Jamaican ester character both linger, creating a complex finish for the proof level.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does Hamilton West Indies 1670 taste like? Ripe banana and tropical esters from the Jamaican component on the nose, layered with dark fruit, smoky wood, and molasses from the Demerara side. The palate is full with dark fruit, spice, tropical fruit, and smoky oak. A warm, complex finish with both rum traditions lingering.
  • Why blend Jamaican and Guyanese rum? The combination is a classic in tiki and classic cocktail culture — the ester-rich funk of Jamaican pot still rum and the earthy, smoky character of Demerara are complementary rather than redundant. Together they create more complexity in a cocktail than either alone.
  • What cocktails work best with the 1670? The aged Daiquiri is Hamilton's intended use — where the complexity of two rum traditions reads clearly against lime and sugar. Also excellent in a Mai Tai, Planter's Punch, or any classic that benefits from the Jamaica-Guyana combination.
  • Why is it called 1670? 1670 is the year Worthy Park Estate in Jamaica began producing rum — one of the oldest continuously operating rum estates in the Caribbean. The name honors that heritage.
  • Is this the same as a Navy rum? It shares the Jamaica + Guyana DNA of traditional British Navy rum blends, but it is not a Navy Strength expression (Hamilton Navy Strength is bottled at 57% ABV). The 1670 is calibrated for everyday cocktail use at 84 proof.
