Bumbu The Original Rum. West Indies Rum Distillery, Barbados — an authentic Caribbean legend inspired by the 16th-century tradition of West Indies sailors blending native spices and fruits into their rum, distilled at a historic Barbadian distillery founded in 1893 using sugarcane sourced from eight countries across the Caribbean and South America.

The word “bumbu” was the name sailors of the West Indies gave to the spiced rum they created for themselves — blending native Caribbean ingredients into their spirit long before commercially produced spiced rum existed. Bumbu The Original is a modern revival of that tradition, produced at the West Indies Rum Distillery in Barbados — the birthplace of rum — using a combination of continuous column stills alongside traditional 19th-century copper pot stills for character and depth.

The sugarcane used in Bumbu is sourced from eight different countries across the Caribbean and South America: Barbados, Belize, Brazil, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guyana, and Honduras. Each country's cane brings different mineral content and sugar characteristics, giving the blended rum a complexity that single-origin rums cannot achieve. The distilled rum is aged in first-fill Kentucky bourbon casks for up to 15 years, then married with native Caribbean botanicals — including citrus peel, plantain, cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg — and rested and re-blended multiple times before bottling. The result is a rum that drinks more like a dessert than a sailor's grog: fruity, lightly sweet, and extraordinarily approachable. Produced by Sovereign Brands, the company also behind Luc Belaire wines.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: A maple syrup hue leads to fruity, peach nectar-like aromatics alongside banana, caramel sauce, vanilla, and almonds. Toasted oak and candied orange with cinnamon spice in the background.
  • Palate: Lightly sweet with brown sugar, vanilla, tropical fruit — plantain, pineapple, and mango — balanced by a warm spice blend of clove, nutmeg, and allspice. Creamy caramel and honeyed vanilla mid-palate with subtle oak tannins.
  • Finish: Smooth, round, and warming with cinnamon, ginger, orchard fruit, baking spice, and a final whisper of toasted coconut. Long and satisfying.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does Bumbu Rum taste like? Fruity and lightly sweet — peach nectar, banana, caramel, and vanilla on the nose. The palate has tropical fruit (plantain, pineapple, mango) with warm spices of clove, nutmeg, and allspice. The finish is smooth and warming with cinnamon, ginger, and a touch of toasted coconut.
  • What does "Bumbu" mean? Bumbu was the name 16th and 17th century West Indies sailors gave to the spiced rum they created by blending native Caribbean fruits and spices into their spirit. Bumbu The Original is a modern revival of that tradition.
  • Why is the sugarcane sourced from eight countries? Different sugarcane varieties from different countries have different mineral content, sugar levels, and aromatic characteristics. Blending rums from eight countries creates a complexity no single-origin rum can achieve, while still being distilled at the historic Barbados distillery.
  • Is Bumbu Rum owned by Lil Wayne? No — Bumbu is produced by Sovereign Brands, which also produces Luc Belaire wines. Lil Wayne is associated with a limited edition Bumbu XO release, but is not the owner of the brand.
  • What cocktails is Bumbu best in? Bumbu is designed primarily as a sipping rum — neat or on the rocks is the ideal serve. In cocktails, it works beautifully in a Rum Old Fashioned or a simple serve with a splash of cream soda. Its sweetness and spice profile mean it doesn't need much added.
