Pact No. 4 uses a bourbon that was finished in Caribbean rum barrels as one of its three blend components. Rum barrels — previously used to age sugarcane-based spirits in the Caribbean — carry residual rum character absorbed into the wood: dark brown sugar, molasses, vanilla, and a tropical sweetness that is distinctive from wine or sherry cask finishes. When a portion of straight Kentucky bourbon is finished in rum casks and then blended with two non-finished bourbons, the result is a profile with bourbon's caramel and grain foundation enhanced by rum's exotic sweetness.
