27 years. 41 barrels distilled between 1989 and 1990 at the Old Heaven Hills Springs Distillery. These barrels survived the catastrophic 1996 distillery fire. A one-time bottling that can never be replicated.

In November 1996, a fire destroyed Heaven Hill's main distillery complex in Bardstown, Kentucky — the largest distillery fire in American bourbon history. It consumed over 90,000 barrels and seven warehouses. Some barrels survived. The 41 barrels used in this release were among that surviving stock — distilled in 1989–1990, before the fire, at the Old Heaven Hills Springs Distillery, matured for 27 years and released as a single one-time bottling when the team determined the barrels had reached peak condition.

At 27 years, these barrels represent some of the oldest American bourbon ever commercially released. When all 41 barrels were mingled, the natural proof settled at 94.7 — unusually low for a barrel proof bourbon of this age, indicating the extreme concentration and mellowing that 27 years of Kentucky climate cycling produces. The result is one of the most historically significant American bourbon releases of the modern era.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Deep, dark mahogany — extraordinarily rich color from nearly three decades in the barrel.
  • Nose: Aged oak, dried fruit, vanilla, and a soft warmth from 27 years of maturation.
  • Palate: Rich, smooth, and complex — the oak is fully integrated at this age, producing toffee, dark fruit, leather, and a grain sweetness that has been completely transformed by the barrel.
  • Finish: Long and warming — spice and fruit fading into a clean, deeply satisfying close.

The 1996 Fire

The Heaven Hill Bardstown fire of November 7, 1996 is the largest distillery fire in U.S. bourbon history. A lightning strike ignited a warehouse, which cascaded into the main distillery and seven warehouses. Over 90,000 barrels were lost. The 41 pre-fire barrels used in this release are direct survivors of that event — making each bottle a documented piece of American bourbon history.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What happened in the 1996 Heaven Hill fire? On November 7, 1996, a lightning strike ignited a warehouse at Heaven Hill's Bardstown campus. The fire spread through the main distillery and seven warehouses, destroying over 90,000 barrels — the largest bourbon distillery fire in American history. Heaven Hill rebuilt at a new Bardstown facility and later acquired the Bernheim Distillery in Louisville. The pre-fire barrels that survived are now among the rarest bourbon stocks in existence.
  • Why is 94.7 proof considered "barrel proof" for a 27-year bourbon? Bourbon enters the barrel at no more than 125 proof and loses proof over time as alcohol evaporates faster than water in most Kentucky warehouse conditions. After 27 years, the natural proof of these barrels had mellowed to 94.7 — still "barrel proof" in that no water was added, but substantially lower than the entry proof. This is characteristic of very long-aged American bourbon.
  • Is this truly a one-time release? Yes — there are only 41 barrels of this specific pre-fire 1989–1990 Heaven Hill stock. Once these bottles are sold, this exact expression cannot be reproduced. No future release from this distillery vintage is possible.
  • How does this compare to other ultra-aged American bourbons? At 27 years, this is among the oldest commercially released American bourbons. Most bourbon peaks between 12–20 years. Very few producers have released 27-year-old American whiskey. The pre-fire historical context makes it additionally significant beyond the age alone.
