Three mashbills. 18 years. The most complex Colonel E.H. Taylor expression — a marriage of two rye-recipe bourbons and a wheated bourbon, all aged together for 18 years.

Most bourbon is made from a single mashbill — one grain recipe, one character profile. The E.H. Taylor 18 Year Marriage is something different: three separate Buffalo Trace mashbills — two distinct rye-recipe bourbons and one wheated bourbon — aged for 18 years and then married together into a single bottling. The concept honors Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor Jr.'s philosophy that great bourbon could be built through thoughtful blending of complementary profiles, not just single-barrel selection.

At 18 years, each of the three components has developed substantial individual complexity before being joined. The rye mashbills contribute structure, spice, and depth; the wheated bourbon adds a soft, caramel-forward roundness that prevents the rye character from becoming too dominant. The result is a bourbon of unusual layered complexity — one that reveals different characteristics depending on how it's approached, how much water is added, and how long it rests in the glass.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Rich amber with deep mahogany tones from 18 years of oak contact.
  • Aroma: Vanilla butter cake, warm caramel, and a complex spice that hints at the three-mashbill structure beneath.
  • Palate: Caramel and cinnamon up front, building into toasted oak and a distinctive spearmint note on the mid-palate that marks Buffalo Trace's aged rye-recipe bourbons.
  • Finish: Long and satisfying — toasted oak, cinnamon, and a touch of spearmint fading into a warm, dry close.

The Three Mashbills

  • Rye Mashbill #1: Buffalo Trace's standard rye recipe — lower rye content, rounder and more caramel-forward
  • Rye Mashbill #2: Higher rye content, producing more spice and structure
  • Wheated Mashbill: Substitutes wheat for rye, the same family as W.L. Weller and Van Winkle — soft, sweet, fruit-forward

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does "marriage" mean in bourbon? A marriage bourbon blends two or more separately aged bourbons — often from different mashbills or warehouse positions — into a unified expression. Unlike a standard small batch (which blends barrels of the same recipe), a marriage deliberately combines bourbons with distinct flavor profiles to create something more complex than any single component.
  • How does E.H. Taylor 18 Year Marriage compare to E.H. Taylor Four Grain? Four Grain uses a single unusual mashbill (corn, rye, wheat, and barley simultaneously) at 12 years. The 18 Year Marriage uses three separate conventional mashbills aged 18 years and then married. Four Grain is a single-mashbill experiment; the Marriage is a blending philosophy.
  • Who was Colonel E.H. Taylor Jr.? Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor Jr. is widely considered the father of the modern bourbon industry. In the 1870s he built what would become Buffalo Trace Distillery and lobbied for the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897 — the first federal consumer protection law for American food and drink. His name on a bottle is the most storied in Kentucky bourbon history.
  • Is the E.H. Taylor 18 Year Marriage a limited release? Yes — all Colonel E.H. Taylor special releases are limited and not ongoing productions. The 18 Year Marriage requires 18-year-old stocks from three separate mashbills, making it one of the most production-constrained expressions in the Taylor lineup.
