A 1978 Eagle Rare 1.75 litre in its original cradle — an oversized bottle with a built-in pouring spout, mounted on a swing frame that tilts it for pouring, from the brand's first years under Seagram.

Eagle Rare was introduced in 1975 by the Charles L. Beam family for Seagram, which puts this bottle in the first few years of the label's existence — decades before the brand moved to Buffalo Trace and became the 10-year single barrel known today. Early Eagle Rare and modern Eagle Rare share a name and very little else.

The presentation is the rarer part. Large-format spirits of the period were sometimes sold with a cradle so the bottle could be tipped rather than lifted, and this one includes both the swing frame and an integrated pouring spout. Decanting hardware like this was usually separated from the bottle, discarded or broken long ago, so complete surviving examples turn up very seldom.

This is a vintage collectible rather than a current release. Fill level, labels, closure, the spout mechanism and the swing frame all show age consistent with a bottle of this period — please review all photographs carefully for the exact condition of what is being offered.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How is 1978 Eagle Rare different from the bottle sold today? Almost entirely. Eagle Rare launched in 1975 under Seagram and only later became part of the Buffalo Trace portfolio, where it was reshaped into the 10-year single barrel on shelves now. A 1978 bottle represents the label's original era, with no production connection to the current expression.
  • What is the swing and spout presentation? A cradle that holds the 1.75L bottle in a frame so it can be tilted to pour rather than lifted, combined with a spout built into the bottle itself. It was a premium packaging flourish of the late 1970s, and because the hardware was easily separated from the bottle, intact examples are scarce.
  • What should I check in the photographs? Fill level first — significant evaporation suggests a compromised seal. Then the closure and label condition, and the swing frame and spout mechanism, since those are the parts most often damaged or missing on surviving examples.
