Single crop Blue Agave. First aged in French and American oak, then blended with reserve liquid from Jose Cuervo's legendary demijohns, then finished for an additional year in Spanish sherry barrels. 250 years of history in one bottle.

Jose Cuervo was founded in 1758 — making it one of the oldest continuously operating tequila producers in Mexico and, by many accounts, in the world. The 250th Aniversario was created to commemorate that heritage with an ultra-aged extra añejo that represents the full depth of the Cuervo cellar's reserves.

The production process is unusually complex for tequila: the agaves come from a single crop field, harvested at full maturity. The spirit is first aged in French and American oak barrels, then blended with reserve liquid from Cuervo's legendary demijohns — large glass vessels in which rare, exceptionally aged tequila has been stored for decades. The blend is then returned to Spanish sherry barrels for a final year of maturation. The result is a tequila of extraordinary complexity — one that reflects multiple layers of aging and cask influence in a way that no standard extra añejo can replicate.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Deep, rich amber — the color of aged Cognac rather than typical tequila.
  • Aroma: Cooked agave sweetness, dried fruit, vanilla, caramel, and a warm sherry influence from the final maturation.
  • Palate: Extraordinarily complex — layers of cooked agave, dried fruit, toffee, oak, and a nuanced sherry sweetness that deepens with each sip. Compares favorably to premium aged Cognac.
  • Finish: Very long — fruit, oak, and sherry notes lingering through a warm, elegant close.

The Demijohn Reserve

Jose Cuervo's cellar maintains demijohns — large glass vessels — of exceptionally aged tequila accumulated over decades. Blending with this reserve liquid is not a technique available to newer producers. It is a direct expression of Cuervo's 250+ year history and is what separates the Aniversario from any other aged tequila on the market.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What are the Cuervo demijohns? Demijohns are large glass vessels used to store and age spirits. Jose Cuervo's cellar maintains demijohns of exceptionally rare, long-aged tequila accumulated over decades of production. Blending with this reserve liquid is a technique unique to Cuervo — no other tequila producer has a comparable reserve of this age and origin.
  • How does the sherry barrel finish affect the tequila? Spanish sherry barrels impart dried fruit, nutty sweetness, and a warm spice that complements the agave character without masking it. After one year in sherry wood, the 250th Aniversario develops a complexity that bridges tequila and Cognac in character.
  • Why is Jose Cuervo significant? Jose Cuervo was founded in 1758 and holds the first license ever granted by the Spanish Crown to produce tequila commercially. It is the oldest continuously operating tequila house in Mexico and the world's largest tequila brand by volume. The 250th Aniversario is the fullest expression of that heritage.
  • Is this comparable to Clase Azul Ultra or Don Julio Real? In price tier, yes. In character, the 250th Aniversario is more complex due to the demijohn reserve component and multi-stage maturation. Clase Azul Ultra and Don Julio Real are exceptional aged tequilas; the Aniversario adds a historical depth that neither can claim.
