12 years. Yellow Spot. Midleton — a single pot still Irish whiskey matured 12 years in American bourbon barrels, Malaga wine casks, and Spanish sherry butts — reviving the Yellow Spot name from Mitchell & Son's 19th-century bonded warehouse tradition, where 'Spots' designated the age of whiskey maturing in the merchant's private casks.

The Spot Whiskeys series — Yellow, Green, Red, and Blue — takes its name from Mitchell & Son of Dublin placing colored spots on whiskey casks to identify age: green for younger stocks, yellow for 12 years, red for 15 years, and blue for the rarest aged stocks. The series was dormant for decades before Green Spot was relaunched in 2013, followed by Yellow Spot. The Malaga wine cask component distinguishes Yellow Spot — sweet, raisin-forward Malaga wine adds the distinctive coffee, creme brûlée, and dried fruit character that defines its profile.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the Spot Whiskeys tradition? Mitchell & Son of Dublin used colored spots on maturing casks to indicate age — a 19th-century merchant marking system. Green, Yellow, Red, and Blue spots designated progressively older stocks. The modern Spot series revives this with Midleton single pot still whiskeys.
  • What is Malaga wine? A sweet, raisin-forward fortified wine from Andalusia, Spain. Malaga wine casks impart distinctive coffee, chocolate, and dried fruit character — the element most distinguishing Yellow Spot from other Irish pot still expressions.
