Don Cayo Tequila was founded in 1954 by Don Cayetano González in El Arenal, a town in the Valley of Tequila in Jalisco — the heartland of tequila production, located in the lowlands zone where volcanic red clay soils and a warm climate produce agave with an earthier, more herbaceous character than the highland regions. Every expression uses 100% Blue Weber agave from the surrounding valley.

The family-owned distillery has operated continuously for over 70 years, producing a range from the crisp Blanco to an Extended Aged Extra Añejo. Don Cayo is particularly known for the Edición Especial miniature gift packs that provide accessible tasting experiences across multiple expressions simultaneously.

The Don Cayo Lineup

Don Cayo Blanco — Unaged, 100% Blue Weber agave from the Valley of Tequila. Fresh and herbal with the earthier lowland agave character. Don Cayo Reposado — Rested in oak for the legal minimum of 2 months through several months, adding subtle vanilla and wood softness to the agave base. Don Cayo Añejo — Aged minimum 1 year in American oak. Caramel, oak spice, and dried fruit over the lowland agave base. Don Cayo Extra Añejo — Extended aging beyond 3 years for the deepest, richest expression in the lineup. Don Cayo Edición Especial Gift Pack — Four 50ml bottles covering the range — ideal for gifting or tasting across the full Don Cayo lineup.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Valley of Tequila and how does it affect Don Cayo’s flavor?

El Arenal sits in the lowland Valley of Tequila — the original tequila-producing zone before the highland regions rose to prominence. Lowland agave grows in volcanic red clay at lower altitude with a warmer, more humid climate, producing a more herbaceous, earthy, and pepper-forward character compared to the sweeter, fruitier highland agave character found in brands like Don Julio and Clase Azul. Both styles are authentically tequila — the difference is terroir.

How long has Don Cayo been in production?

Since 1954 — over 70 years of continuous production in the same Valley of Tequila location founded by Don Cayetano González. One of the older family-owned tequila operations still producing independently.
