Del Maguey Tobala is made from one of the most prized wild agaves in mezcal production — Tobala (Agave potatorum), a small broad-leafed plant that grows naturally only in the highest altitude canyons in the shade of oak trees, found like truffles rather than cultivated, requiring eight Tobala hearts to produce the same volume as one Espadin heart, resulting in a spirit of exceptional concentration and sweetness.
Tobala grows in conditions fundamentally different from cultivated Espadin — the high altitude, shaded canyon environment and the plant's smaller size produce an agave with more concentrated sugars and a distinctly different flavor character. Del Maguey limits Tobala production deliberately to avoid over-harvesting and protect the natural regeneration cycles of the wild plants. The sweet, fruity nose of mango and cinnamon, and the long, extra-smooth finish, reflect the concentration that comes from eight small wild hearts where other mezcals use one large cultivated one.
