Frank August Case Study: 07 French Connection Bourbon Whiskey. Frank August, Lexington, Kentucky — the seventh installment of the experimental Case Study series, a limited 7-barrel batch that blends Kentucky straight bourbon and rye whiskeys then finishes them across three distinct cask types — Calvados, Martinique rhum, and Caribbean rum barrels — delivering baked apple, pear compote, toasted coconut, raw sugar, vanilla cream, molasses, spiced rum, and baked pineapple at 107.4 proof.

The "French Connection" concept draws on the historical relationship between France and the United States — using the Statue of Liberty as a symbolic anchor — but the flavor execution is entirely practical: Calvados barrels from Normandy, rhum agricole casks from Martinique, and Caribbean rum barrels each contribute a distinct dimension that American oak alone cannot produce. Calvados — the apple brandy of Normandy — brings orchard fruit, apple compote, and a refined French oak character; Martinique rhum agricole casks add the distinctive grassy, mineral, and tropical cane character of AOC-designated rhum; Caribbean rum barrels contribute the broader tropical fruit, raw sugar, and molasses richness that completes the profile.

The 7-barrel batch is the largest in the Case Study series to date, reflecting the complexity of balancing three distinct finishing cask types at a consistent quality level. At 107.4 proof, the French Connection is bottled high enough to carry the full weight of three finishing influences while remaining approachable without dilution for those who want to experience the layered cask character at full expression.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Baked apple, pear compote, and stone fruit from the Calvados cask influence, with toasted coconut and a subtle Martinique rhum minerality underneath. Inviting and complex.
  • Palate: Raw sugar, vanilla cream, and crème brûlée-style richness lead before molasses, spiced rum, and baked pineapple from the rum casks develop. The three-cask finishing creates layers that reveal themselves sequentially.
  • Finish: Long and steady with brown sugar, dried tropical fruit, soft oak, and a measured sweetness alongside rye spice, cinnamon, and cracked pepper from the bourbon-rye base. One of the more complex finishes in the Case Study series.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does Frank August Case Study 07 French Connection taste like? Baked apple, pear compote, and toasted coconut on the nose. Raw sugar, vanilla cream, molasses, spiced rum, and baked pineapple on the palate. Long finish with brown sugar, tropical fruit, rye spice, and cracked pepper.
  • What does each finishing cask contribute? Calvados (Normandy apple brandy) adds orchard fruit, baked apple, and pear. Martinique rhum agricole casks add grassy, mineral, and tropical cane character. Caribbean rum barrels add raw sugar, molasses, and broader tropical fruit richness. Together the three casks create a flavor profile that no single finishing wood could produce.
  • How does Case Study 07 relate to the rest of the series? It is the first Case Study to use a three-cask finishing program — previous releases used one or two cask types. The 7-barrel batch is also the largest in the series. Both reflect the ambition of the French Connection concept: the most complex finishing program Frank August has attempted.
  • What cocktail works best with Case Study 07? A bold Old Fashioned using a light touch of demerara syrup matches the brown sugar and molasses notes. Also excellent neat in a wide-mouth tasting glass where the orchard fruit, rum sweetness, and spice can open fully with a few minutes of air.
