Blanton’s Single Barrel Bourbon (700ml, 46.5% ABV) is the original modern single-barrel bourbon — launched by Buffalo Trace in 1984 under master distiller Elmer T. Lee and taken from the center-cut sections of the famous Warehouse H, the section Colonel Albert Blanton himself identified as the best for aging bourbon at his distillery. A deep, satisfying nose of nutmeg and spices; powerful dry vanilla in harmony with hints of honey amid strong caramel and corn; medium finish of returning corn and nutmeg.

Blanton’s is distilled by Buffalo Trace in Frankfort, Kentucky, from the high-rye Buffalo Trace mash bill of corn, rye, and malted barley. The high-rye build (where wheat-heavy bourbons like Weller Special Reserve produce softer profiles) gives Blanton’s the fruit and spice character that plays so cleanly against caramel and char from the barrel. Originally designated for ambassadors, dignitaries, and Colonel Blanton’s family and friends, the Single Barrel today scored three points higher than Pappy Van Winkle’s 23 Year Old Bourbon at the Ultimate Spirits Challenge in 2012.

Albert Bacon Blanton was born in 1881 on a farm just outside Frankfort, Kentucky. He started at the Old Fire Copper Distillery (O.F.C.) as an office boy at 16, worked through every department, was named superintendent at 20, and remained at the distillery until his retirement in 1952. Like his mentor E.H. Taylor, he was a traditional bourbon aristocrat wedded to Kentucky straight bourbon production. The eight stopper designs on Blanton’s bottles each carry a different letter of the alphabet topped with a horse-and-jockey figurine; placed in order they spell B-L-A-N-T-O-N’S, and the jockey’s poses display eight scenes of a horse race from standing at the gate to crossing the finish line.
