Mocambo 20 Year Art Edition Rum. Licores Veracruz, Veracruz, Mexico — a hand-numbered, individually unique bottle wrapped in bark fibers from the Amate tree by Mexican artist Maestro Víctor Fernández Limón, containing a 20-year single barrel Mexican rum aged at 900 meters above sea level in European white oak — one of the most visually distinctive bottles in the spirits world.

Licores Veracruz has been producing spirits in the Mexican state of Veracruz for over six decades. Veracruz is Mexico's oldest rum-producing region — sugarcane cultivation has thrived in its humid, subtropical coastal climate since the colonial era, and the state's sugar estates grow cane that is hand-mashed rather than machine-processed in Mocambo's pre-Hispanic production approach. The rum is distilled from a combination of molasses and sugarcane juice in column and pot stills, then aged in single barrels of European (Spanish) white oak rather than the American oak bourbon barrels used by most Caribbean producers. European white oak imparts a fundamentally different character: drier, more tannic, with less vanilla and caramel and more spice, leather, and dried fruit depth.

At 900 meters above sea level in a humid subtropical climate, the aging conditions are unique — not the tropical heat of Caribbean coastal warehouses, but the cooler, drier mountain air of highland Veracruz. The Amate tree fiber bottle wrap is not just decoration: each bottle is a handmade art object by Maestro Víctor Fernández Limón, individually numbered, and no two are identical.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Toasted oak is predominant, followed by vanilla, caramel, almond, hazelnut, and tobacco. Complex and inviting — the European oak gives a drier, spicier character than bourbon-cask aged rum. Dried fruits including banana, figs, ripe red grapes, and kiwi develop with air.
  • Palate: The defining characteristic is pronounced dryness — the European white oak aging creates a spirit with no American oak sweetness, instead offering leather, roasted nuts, dark chocolate, raisin, coffee, and dried fruit. Peppery heat with cinnamon and herbaceous character from the highland aging.
  • Finish: Warm and complex with raisin, coffee, and dried date notes. Mildly bitter tea and cocoa flavors linger on the back palate. Long and dry.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does Mocambo 20 Year taste like? Toasted oak, vanilla, caramel, almond, hazelnut, and tobacco on the nose, with dried fruits. Dry and complex on the palate with leather, dark chocolate, raisin, and coffee. Warm finish with dried dates and lingering bitter cocoa.
  • What is Amate tree fiber and why wrap the bottle in it? Amate is a type of bark paper used in pre-Hispanic Mexican art traditions, made from fibers of trees in the ficus family. Artist Maestro Víctor Fernández Limón individually wraps and hand-numbers each bottle, making every Mocambo 20 Year a unique collectible art object.
  • Why does Mocambo taste so different from Caribbean rum? Two key differences: European white oak (instead of American oak bourbon barrels) and highland aging at 900 meters. European oak produces a drier, spicier, more tannic profile with less vanilla and caramel. The highland climate creates a slower, drier aging than tropical Caribbean conditions.
  • Is Mexican rum a recognized category? Mexico has a centuries-old rum tradition in Veracruz, dating to colonial-era sugarcane cultivation. Licores Veracruz is one of the most recognized producers in a category that rarely receives the international attention it deserves.
  • Is Mocambo 20 Year good for sipping? Yes — its complexity and 40% ABV make it a rewarding contemplative sipper, particularly for those who enjoy dry, oak-forward spirits. Its profile pairs beautifully with a fine cigar. Give it time to breathe and warm up to its unique style.
