Basil Hayden Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. Jim Beam Distillery / Beam Suntory, Clermont, Kentucky — one of the four original Small Batch Bourbon Collection expressions created by Master Distiller Booker Noe in 1992, distinguished from the other three by its high-rye mash bill that uses twice the rye grain of a standard bourbon, producing a lighter, more delicate, and more approachable style at 80 proof — named for Meredith Basil Hayden Sr., the 18th-century Kentucky distiller who pioneered the high-rye approach.

In 1992, Booker Noe — Jim Beam's legendary master distiller and grandson of Jim Beam himself — created the Small Batch Bourbon Collection to reintroduce premium, craft-focused bourbon to an American market that had largely abandoned whiskey for lighter spirits. The four expressions in the collection each represent a different style: Knob Creek (full-proof, heavy oak), Baker's (high-proof, complex), Booker's (uncut, unfiltered), and Basil Hayden's (the accessible, high-rye counterpoint). Basil Hayden was named after a real person: Meredith Basil Hayden Sr., a Maryland rye farmer who moved to Kentucky in 1796 and began distilling with a higher-than-typical rye content — a practice Booker Noe honored by building the brand's entire identity around that same high-rye philosophy.

The mash bill uses twice the rye of most standard Kentucky bourbons. That rye percentage creates the signature Basil Hayden character: lighter body, more delicate mouthfeel, peppermint and spice notes from the rye alongside the expected caramel and vanilla from the new charred oak, and a gentle finish that makes it one of the most approachable straight bourbons for those new to the category. Bottled at 80 proof rather than the higher proofs of the other Small Batch expressions, it is Booker Noe's explicit invitation: here is bourbon without intimidation.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Light and inviting — peppermint, pepper, and a gentle honey sweetness with subtle citrus and vanilla. The high-rye mash bill creates a distinctly lighter aromatic profile than heavier-corn bourbons.
  • Palate: Spicy yet smooth with the rye's pepper and spice character balanced by caramel sweetness and a honey-toned lightness. The 80 proof keeps the body delicate and approachable without sacrificing character.
  • Finish: Warm and gently spiced with a lingering peppery sweetness. Clean and refined rather than bold and assertive.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does Basil Hayden taste like? Light and approachable — peppermint, pepper, and honey sweetness on the nose. Spicy yet smooth on the palate with caramel and rye spice. Warm, gently spiced finish. The most delicate and approachable of the four Small Batch Collection bourbons.
  • What is the Small Batch Bourbon Collection? Four premium bourbons created by Booker Noe in 1992 to reintroduce craft bourbon to American consumers: Knob Creek, Baker's, Booker's, and Basil Hayden's. Each represents a different style philosophy. Basil Hayden's is the high-rye, low-proof, approachable entry point of the four.
  • Why does Basil Hayden use twice the rye? Honoring Meredith Basil Hayden Sr.'s original 1796 Kentucky distilling approach. The higher rye content creates a lighter, more delicate, and more spice-forward character than standard corn-dominant bourbon mash bills. It is the defining production decision that separates Basil Hayden from the other Small Batch expressions.
  • What cocktails work best with Basil Hayden? Manhattan (the high-rye spice integrates beautifully with sweet vermouth), Whiskey Sour, Old Fashioned, or neat with a single ice cube. Its lighter body and 80 proof also make it an excellent introductory bourbon for those exploring the category.
