Plantation Jamaica 2009 Rum. Cognac Ferrand / Maison Ferrand, Jamaica — a single-vintage 2009 Jamaican rum blended from the Long Pond and Monymusk distilleries, aged in Jamaica then re-aged in cognac casks at Chateau de Bonbonnet, France, capturing the delicate and complex Jamaican pot still character of that specific vintage year: dried banana, cooked apple, guava, honeysuckle, and vanilla.

Each Plantation single-vintage Jamaica release documents a specific year of production at specific distilleries — a transparent approach to provenance that most blended rum brands cannot offer. The 2009 vintage draws from two of Jamaica's most historically significant pot still producers: Long Pond in the Trelawny district, known for high-ester pot still rums with long fermentation character, and Monymusk (Clarendon), which operates both modern multi-column continuous stills and antique double-retort pot stills for its own distinctive blend of pot and column still distillates.

Following the Plantation double-aging process, the Jamaica 2009 was first aged in Jamaica in ex-bourbon barrels, developing its tropical and funky Jamaican character under the island's hot, humid climate. It then traveled to Chateau de Bonbonnet in Cognac, France, for secondary maturation in former cognac casks. The result is a single-vintage rum with Jamaican pot still depth refined by the European aging process — the funk and fruit preserved, the rough edges smoothed.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Delicate and complex — dried banana, cooked apple, and guava open, followed by floral notes of honeysuckle and vanilla. Less assertive than the 2005 vintage, more refined and approachable.
  • Palate: The Jamaican pot still character comes through in a restrained, elegant way. Tropical fruit — banana, guava, and apple — integrate with vanilla and the subtle dried fruit influence of the cognac cask re-aging.
  • Finish: Medium-long and clean. The honeysuckle and vanilla from the nose carry through with a light Jamaican fruit close.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does Plantation Jamaica 2009 taste like? Dried banana, cooked apple, and guava on the nose with honeysuckle and vanilla. Restrained and elegant Jamaican pot still character on the palate with tropical fruit, banana, and vanilla. Medium-long clean finish.
  • How does the 2009 compare to the 2005 vintage? The 2005 is more assertive and complex — a higher-ester expression with deeper banana, prune, coffee, and raisin character from its additional years of tropical aging. The 2009 is more delicate, more floral, and more approachable — a good entry point into Plantation's Jamaican single-vintage range.
  • What is the significance of a single-vintage rum? Unlike blended rums that combine multiple years to achieve a consistent house style, single-vintage rums document the specific character of the cane, fermentation, and weather conditions of a particular year. Each vintage tastes slightly different, making them genuinely collectible and a unique record of a specific harvest year's potential.
  • Is this a sipping rum or a cocktail rum? Primarily a sipping rum — the complexity and vintage specificity are best appreciated neat at room temperature. However, its 42% ABV and Jamaican fruit character also make it excellent in a Daiquiri or Mai Tai where vintage rum provenance can shine.
