Isle of Barra debuts Black Forest rum

Spirits producer Isle of Barra Distillers has infused its Dark Scottish Rum with wild cherry and blackcurrant.

The expression draws inspiration from the ‘darker, more mystical side’ of Barra, reflected through dark forest flavours, lifted with bright orange peel and mellowed by coconut. The nose offers a ‘soft coastal character’ that leads into ‘ripe black cherry and dark berry fruit, layered with caramel and vanilla’. On the palate, ‘rich black cherry takes the lead, while the finish is ‘long and warming’. Michael Morrison, CEO and co-founder, said: “We’re really proud of this latest release. Black Forest is a rum designed not just to be tasted, but to be discovered. Inspired by the wild and wonderful island we call home, this rum is exciting, rich and absolutely delicious.” The rum is bottled at 38% and retails for £36 (US$48). The brand recommends serving the rum in cocktails, such as its signature serve, the Black Forest Rum Old Fashioned. The cocktail pairs 50ml of the rum with black cherry syrup and aromatic bitters. Morrison founded Isle of Barra with his wife, Katie, in 2017. Its revenues rose by 13.5% in 2025, driven by a 24% increase in production volumes year on year. The producer recently offered whisky enthusiasts the chance to invest in casks and equity ahead of opening its new distillery in 2027.
