The house was founded in 1765 by Richard Hennessy, an Irish military officer who had served in the French army before settling in the Cognac region and entering the brandy trade. From those origins grew what would become the largest Cognac house in the world.
The Fillioux Dynasty
One of the most remarkable facts about Hennessy is that, since the early days, the role of Master Blender has been held by members of a single family: the Fillioux family. For seven generations, the Filliouxs have guarded the house style and selected the eaux-de-vie that go into every bottle. Defining the Category
Hennessy has shaped the very language of Cognac. The house is widely credited with helping popularize the XO (Extra Old) designation, having created an XO Cognac in the 19th century as a private blend before the term became an industry standard.
