Brandy is distilled wine — grape-based spirit aged in oak, produced across France, Spain, the Americas, and beyond. At its finest, brandy rivals whisky in complexity and age-worthiness. The category spans everything from everyday VS Cognac to century-old Armagnac. Wooden Cork ships the full brandy and Cognac range nationwide.
Cognac is double-distilled in copper pot stills from white wine grapes grown in the Charente region of France, aged in Limousin or Tronçais oak. The grading system reflects minimum age: VS (2+ years), VSOP (4+ years), XO (10+ years). The major houses — Hennessy, Rémy Martin, Courvoisier, and Martell — dominate the market, while smaller producers like Hine, Hardy, and Ferrand offer exceptional quality for enthusiasts.
France's other great brandy, produced in Gascony via continuous column distillation (unlike Cognac's double pot still method). Armagnac is earthier, more rustic, and often more complex than Cognac — and regularly available at vintage-dated age statements going back decades. An underappreciated category for serious spirit enthusiasts.
Brandy de Jerez is aged using the solera system — the same method used for Sherry — producing rich, dark, fruit-forward brandies with significant sweetness and depth. Torres and Cardenal Mendoza are the benchmark producers.
California produces exceptional grape brandy from Colombard and Chenin Blanc, with E&J and Germain-Robin among the notable producers. American brandy is lighter and more approachable than Cognac, well-suited for cocktails.
Cognac is a specific type of brandy — all Cognac is brandy, but not all brandy is Cognac. Cognac must be produced in the Cognac region of France from specific grape varieties using a defined double distillation process. Other brandies (Armagnac, Spanish brandy, American brandy) follow different production methods and regional rules.
These are minimum age designations: VS (Very Special) = minimum 2 years in oak; VSOP (Very Superior Old Pale) = minimum 4 years; XO (Extra Old) = minimum 10 years. All refer to the youngest eau de vie in the blend. Higher designations like Napoleon, Extra, and Hors d'âge indicate even longer aging.
