Breckenridge Distillery intros Sherry cask-finished Bourbon

by Michael J Ritchie

Colorado-based Breckenridge Distillery has expanded its Bourbon range with the launch of a new expression finished in Pedro Ximenez Sherry casks.

After an extensive search for barrels, Breckenridge chose barrels from Andalusia in Spain. Each barrel was selected from a range of retired pedro ximenez barrels that are hundreds of years old. On the nose, Breckenridge Sherry Cask Finish is reminiscent of "black liquorice, fig compote and almond butter", and on the palate it has notes of "orange marmalade and Madagascar vanilla bean". It has a long finish of sweet oak, ripe sultanas and a "perfectly balanced heat". Byran Nolt, founder and CEO of the Breckenridge Distillery said: "There are countless ravishing single malt whiskies aged in used Bourbon barrels, but a Sherry cask-aged malt whisky just has a little extra special mojo. We were determined to find a Sherry cask to marry with Bourbon-style Whiskey. "Our search for the perfect Sherry was unbalanced until we made it all the way to the concentrated and creamy side of the Sherry spectrum and found the perfect match, Pedro Ximenez." Breckenridge Sherry Cask Finish is available in select markets.
