Mount Gay XO Triple Cask Blend Rum. Mount Gay Distilleries, St. Lucy, Barbados — from the world's oldest documented rum distillery (1703), a blend of pot still and column still rums aged 5 to 17 years in three cask types — ex-American whiskey, ex-bourbon, and ex-cognac — crafted by Trudiann Branker, the first female Master Blender in Barbados's rum history. No coloring or additives.

A legal deed dated February 20, 1703 confirms rum production at the Mount Gay estate in St. Lucy, Barbados — the oldest documented record of rum distillation in the world. Over 320 years later, the distillery still operates on the same hilltop site, now under the direction of Trudiann Branker, who in 2019 became the first woman to hold the Master Blender title in Barbados's entire rum history. One of her most significant contributions has been the reimagining of the XO expression.

The XO Triple Cask Blend is released in a single annual batch — meaning every year's release carries slight differences as the blend evolves with each vintage. The foundation is a combination of pot still rums (from Mount Gay's Scottish McMillan and Fragasa double-retort copper pot stills, which produce heavier, more palate-clinging spirits) and column still rums (fruitier, grassier, butterscotch-forward), individually aged in three distinct barrel types: ex-American whiskey, ex-bourbon, and ex-cognac. The triple-cask approach — Branker's innovation over the previous single-cask XO — adds dimension and complexity that the original could not achieve. At 43% ABV with no coloring or additives, it is an honest, refined expression of Barbadian rum tradition.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Coconut, raisin, caramel, vanilla, roasted nuts, banana, and dark chocolate. Dry spice notes weave through a soft, inviting aromatic profile.
  • Palate: Round, smooth, and richly creamy. Salted caramel, baked fig, clove, and dark chocolate are the primary flavors — the official tasting notes from Branker herself. Layers of dried fruit, honey, baking spice, tropical fruit, tobacco, and orange peel develop with time. The triple-cask influence gives complexity beyond a single-wood approach.
  • Finish: Long, elegant, and slightly mineral — a typically Barbadian character. Tobacco, sweet spice, and melted wood fade slowly. The fruit notes drift first; the oak tannins linger last.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does Mount Gay XO taste like? Coconut, raisin, caramel, vanilla, and dark chocolate on the nose. Round and richly creamy on the palate with salted caramel, baked fig, clove, dark chocolate, dried fruit, and tropical fruit. Long, elegant finish with tobacco, sweet spice, and lingering oak tannins.
  • What is the significance of 1703? A legal deed dated February 20, 1703 confirms rum production at the Mount Gay estate — the oldest documented record of rum distillation in the world. No other operating rum distillery can document an earlier date of continuous production.
  • What is the Triple Cask approach? The XO is aged in three distinct cask types: ex-American whiskey, ex-bourbon, and ex-cognac barrels. Each wood type imparts different characteristics — American whiskey adds spice and grain complexity, bourbon adds vanilla and caramel depth, cognac adds dried fruit and floral notes. The combination creates layered complexity no single cask could achieve.
  • How should I serve Mount Gay XO? Neat at room temperature, or over a large ice cube — Branker recommends a cube made from coconut water (the “Coco Hill” serve) which subtly complements the rum's own coconut notes. Excellent in a Rum Old Fashioned.
  • Why does the XO vary slightly year to year? It is released as a single annual batch rather than a continuously blended product. As the stocks within the blend evolve, Branker makes small adjustments to maintain the XO's character — meaning each vintage is a distinct expression of her vision in that year.
