Aged twice as long as the standard Eagle Rare 10 Year. A hand-crafted crystal decanter with two sculpted crystal eagles. Buffalo Trace's most prestigious bourbon presentation.
Double Eagle Very Rare takes the Eagle Rare program — the same Buffalo Trace mashbill and distilling philosophy — and extends the maturation to approximately 20 years before bottling. At twice the age of Eagle Rare 10 Year, the bourbon has developed a fundamentally different character: the wine-like fruit aromatics of younger Eagle Rare have evolved into something richer, more concentrated, and more complex, with the gracefully aged oak that defines the best ultra-long-matured American whiskey.
The presentation matches the ambition. The Double Eagle comes in a hand-crafted crystal decanter featuring two sculptured crystal glass eagles — one inside the bottle and one serving as the stopper. It is presented in a wooden gift box and is one of the most visually striking bourbon presentations available at any price point. The 2022 release continues the series that was launched in 2019.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Deep, rich amber with the extraordinary color depth of 20 years of barrel contact.
- Nose: Hints of vanilla, toasted oak, and caramel — more concentrated and complex than the 10 Year, with the graceful restraint of long aging.
- Palate: A gracefully aged oaky flavor — the oak integration is complete, with caramel, vanilla, and dried fruit speaking through rather than against the wood.
- Finish: Warm and lingering — long, clean, and deeply satisfying.
The Crystal Decanter
Each Double Eagle decanter is hand-crafted crystal featuring two sculpted eagles — one inside the bottle that is visible through the glass, and one that forms the stopper. The presentation reflects the bourbon's position as the pinnacle of the Eagle Rare lineup and makes it one of the most display-worthy objects in the premium American bourbon category.

Frequently Asked Questions
- How does Double Eagle Very Rare compare to Eagle Rare 17 Year BTAC? Eagle Rare 17 Year is part of the annual Buffalo Trace Antique Collection — 17 years old, bottled at a traditional proof, wine-like and fruit-forward. Double Eagle is approximately 20 years old and focused on gracefully aged oak character. The BTAC 17 Year is more broadly acclaimed; Double Eagle is more visually prestigious and more age-forward.
- Is the crystal decanter functional? Yes — the crystal decanter is fully functional as a permanent display piece after the bourbon is finished. The sculpted eagles make it one of the most striking bar objects in the category.
- How often is Double Eagle released? Double Eagle Very Rare is an annual or near-annual release from Buffalo Trace, but production is very limited. The 2022 is the third or fourth release in the series depending on counting.
- Is Double Eagle a good gift? Yes — the combination of the visual presentation (crystal decanter, wooden box, sculpted eagles) and the Buffalo Trace pedigree makes it immediately understood as a serious and impressive gift for any bourbon enthusiast.
